I don't really drive on long vacation/business trips, but I do fly quite a bit and am really feeling the crunch of increasing fares & fees and decreasing service. I notice they're going to start charging to check ALL bags. I'm just waiting for them to have you step on a scale to determine your fare. <_<

I'm glad I don't have a SUV, my Subaru Forrester gets pretty decent mileage. I expect my next car will be a hybrid.

I'm curious as to how much this has impacted folks here.

i usually take as many trips as possible throughout the year from L.A. to Boston and NY. i've been used to airfares around $300 for years but looking at fares in the vicinity now of $600 is most definitely going to cut down on my visits. it's a drag, to say the least!

I've gotten used to my lawn maintenance goats , but I'm having a harder time with making the switch to kerosene for my Molotov Cocktails .

Certainly would think long and hard before making any trips to Northern England these days, except for work.

Fortunately, living in the West Country, a traditional holiday area, means there's less of a need to get out of the place on vacation. We just get innundated with swarms of caravans from London and other cities in the Summer though. ;)

Appreciating even more than before my free travel (senior concession) on bus, tram and train in Greater Manchester.

Indeed! Though I don't get free train travel, even in the Cardiff commuter area. But free bus travel throughout Wales.

Actually, the new pass which I got in April is valid for free bus travel throughout the UK. (Not everything that Gordon Brown has done is bad!) Haven't tried it off my patch yet - was in Liverpool the other day, but didn't get round to using it. As for rail use, it's particularly handy for zipping up to Wigan for afternoon gigs during the jazz festival. Speaking of Wigan, their jazz club is presenting Darius Brubeck in half an hour's time at a rather inaccessible spot (for public transport users like me) called Lowton.

Not really travel plans, but thanks to the gas prices my job (which requires a commute) is now costing me a fortune every week. Yet another reason I'm going to Austin because I'll be much closer to where I'll be working and the commute will be about 1/3 the distance I'm traveling now.

I'm doing a 5-way carpool to a gig in Waco tomorrow

What, did you lose a bet or something?

Nah, just looking to cheapify the fuel cost.

As for Waco, hey, it's ALWAYS a pleasure... or something. :g

The only changes I've made are ones I should have made years ago. Combining errands, cutting out unnecesary trips, etc. I miss my 50mpg bike (and envy Lon!) big time now that I'm commuting in an old Ford Aerostar...

Oh and yes - I'm thinking of having a holiday in the US next year.

Yeah, you and just about anyone with a Euro/Pound in his/her pocket. ;)

As for me, I flew about 500,000 km last year (300,000 miles). It'll be about the same this year. Fortunately, I only pay for about 12% of it.

As for the rest of travel burden, I never check bags, nor do I carry on more than one, medium-sized messenger (shoulder) bag. Loafers only. Belts with simulated-metal buckles.
