Teasing the Korean Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 How does it compare to African Beat, Orgy in Rhythm and Drum Suite? Quote
Big Al Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 If you've heard one, you've heard 'em all, IMO. Quote
mikeweil Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 Neither better nor worse than any of the other Blakey drum albums. If you like these, you will like it too. A bit of everything: some rather African sounding, some swinging, good contributions from Ray Bryant. It's closest to Orgy in Rhythm, but organized better. I have a superfluous copy of both volumes, Japanese CDs, from 1993 - PM me if interested, and we'll work out a deal. Quote

JSngry Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 Too bad there was never a Holiday For Shirts. Then we coulda had the Bud Bowl, only with Art Blakey CDs. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted July 3, 2008 Author Report Posted July 3, 2008 Too bad there was never a Holiday For Shirts. Or "Holiday Foreskins." Quote
Free For All Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Too bad there was never a Holiday For Shirts. I believe that was a Paul Anka side. Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted July 4, 2008 Report Posted July 4, 2008 What is the solo Jo Jones??? Sounds fascinating! Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted July 4, 2008 Report Posted July 4, 2008 Not quite solo, but try "Percussion and Bass" recorded with Milt Hinton in 1960 for Everest. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 What is the solo Jo Jones??? Sounds fascinating! LP on Columbia from I think the late '60s or early '70s (not sure when recorded) that has Papa Jo exploring various parts of the kit and discussing them, from what I'm told not unlike the Baby Dodds in some respects. I'd like to get a copy. The Dodds, of course, is a hell of a record. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 "Drums Around the Corner" does it for me. Art Blakey with Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons, Paul Chambers, and Jymie Merritt plus Philly Joe Jones, Roy Haynes, and Ray Barretto congas. LOTS of percussion (three drummers, plus congas), but you've still got a jazz group in there too. Nice hybrid of a more traditional Blakey date, and his "all-drums" projects. Quote
JSngry Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 What about Holiday Foreskins? Have those tapes been released in uncut form yet? Quote
