The Magnificent Goldberg
wasnt this his last BN till the 80s? whats it like? is it seriously only on lp and in the mosaic? never a singlular cd issue? is it good, whats it sound like? 1 No. It was done on 3 March 1969. "Ain't no way" was done 23 June 1969. And Stanley was on McGriff's "Electric funk", recorded September 1969. 2 It's good. If you're a Thad Jones fan as well as a Stan fan, it's bloody good. 3 Yes - except maybe there was a Japanese issue on CD. Never saw one, though. 4 Sounds very much like Stan, Thad, Cedar, Buster and Mickey. MG
sidewinder
'Bloody good' would be my opinion too - a Liberty-era Blue Note gem. Both Stan and Thad in fime form. Reminds me of Donald Byrd's 'The Creeper' in terms of quality meeting/exceeding expectations.
JSngry
Very good album.
Shawn
I agree with all of the above, an excellent session! The kind of album that was almost completely extinct during that era of Blue Note.
John L
I agree very much with the enthusiasm for this one. I first heard it after picking up the Turrentine Mosaic, as was blown away at first listen: a real gem.
JohnS
Another one to pull out and play. That's one of the things I like about this place, makes me get out some overlooked discs.
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez
late period Stanley Blue notes are HARD TO FIND!!!!!!!!!!!!
danasgoodstuff
Very straight ahead, maybe more so than even his earliest BNs, depending on where exactly you think the jazz straight and narrow is... Your enjoyment may depend on your taste for cooking on a lower flame. I liked it but haven't listened in quite some time, draw your own conclusions. Bought a vinyl copy not that long ago for not that much, but definitely one of ST's harder ones to find.
Peter Friedman
I always liked this one. Stanley and Thad fit well together. Had it on LP and now on the Mosaic CD box.

Shrdlu
Very good session. Mind you, I like all of Stan's sessions. It's a shame that the only CD version is the Mixmaster one.

sidewinder
Just spinning Disk 5 of the Stanley T. Mosaic box, what a great session this is. Stanley's version of 'Stella By Starlight' is exceptional. You get a very tangible impression listening to this album that the classic era at Blue Note was coming to an end and albums such as this would soon be no more. Of course, Thad Jones was also on a major roll back in the late 60s. Very consistent. Edited March 8, 2009 by sidewinder
JohnS
I'm going going to have to play this one again. I'm sorry to say it didn't grab me as much as it did some of you guys the last time around.
