Clifford Brown Set

Someone posted the following on Mike Fitzgerald's Hard bop group on Yahoo and I thought it might be of interest. The 15 Euro price must be per cd, not the whole set.

Dear All,

After searching the net, I found an address for Philology Records in Italy and have been corresponding with Paolo Piangiarelli: he has sent me a list of 11 Volumes in the 'Brownie's Eyes' series, which he says can be obtained from him for EUR15 (fifteen Euros) plus postage plus 4% VISA fee. But the significant part of his message concerns the track and personnel listings, which are as follows (apologies for the length of this post but the material is obviously of interest to many of us):

Hi Brad,

WOW!!! Thanks for that news! Damn, Philology has a way of making my money disappear... but the music is definitely worth it! I've got the Bird's Eyes series (well, except for the "new" CDR's that've been created, which puts everything into chronological order... I think), and those are some amazing historical documents. Bird is simply sublime on some of those dates!

I wonder how the sound quality will be on these Brownie sessions. If they're like most of the Parker dates, I'll be a happy man!

Cheers,

Shane

There go my savings. More Brownie sessions is just what I need :P

I have a lot of the Philology Bird LPs and CDs. The sound is very uneven. From pretty bad to pretty good. But the music, oh my! It's Bird. And rare. Many of the tracks made their first - and only appearances so far - on the Philology releases.

There was a Clifford Brown/Chet Baker Philology LP several years ago that had Chet Baker rare dates and one opening track of Clifford Brown practising his trumpet. Not the type of music you listen every week.

I can't believe there're something like 56 volumes in the Bird's Eyes series!

Btw, do those CDs come in bare bones format, i.e. just the CD with no liner notes, front and back covers? I got a message from Paulo saying once an order's placed, he'll send the front and back covers by e-mail.

The commercially issued discs have liner notes and complete discographical data. The packaging was rather minimal, but sufficient. I don't know about the mail order only discs.

Does anyone have any of the Bird's Eyes volumes from 26-43. Is that just the reissue of the previous volumes in chronological order?

The last two commerical volumes of Bird's Eyes (24 and 25) were really superb. They reissued the Open Door material for the first time. (I believe that another company has now followed in their footsteps.) There is some absolutely incredible Bird on those discs, so incredible that I had to rethink the idea that Bird may have lost a step by 1953. The discs are filled out with really fine broadcasts of Cootie Williams with Bud Powell and Cleanhead Vinson.

Wow! I hadn't looked at this thread since last year. I had no idea that there were more than 25. I noticed right off the bat that what's on Vol 26 replicates what's on Stash's Birth of the Bebop. Thus, the job will be to figure out what the heck I don't have and do have. Cadence doesn't seem to have above Volume 25, nor Worlds Records. Bummer.

In general, the Bird's Eyes series up to volume 25 made an effort not to duplicate what was already on the market, including the Stash releases, the various Birdland releases, the Cafe Society, etc. The new volumes are made up mostly of material from volumes 1-25 and some of these other recordings that were available on other labels before.

But appear to be a few completely new things as well.

Looking at what's on the Bird's Eyes Philology list of volumes 26 thru 56, here are some of the previously unissued items I found. Accuracy not guaranted.

- Volume 26 includes quite a number of items from Bob Redcross which have not seen the light of the day so far from the February 1943 private session plus tracks recorded by the Pete King quartet with King playing the Charlie Parker white plastic saxophone that was auctioned by Christie's of London in September 1994. Christie's had a beautiful catalogue from that auction of the Chan Parker collection,

- volume 27 seems to include additional material from the concerts Bird played with the Woody Herman band in Kansas City in 1951,

- volume 28 has a trio of additional sides (with Dizzy Gillespie) from the November 14, 1952 afternoon concert at Carnegie Hall,

- volume 29 has several unissued sides from the JATP February 11, 1949 concert at Carnegie Hall,

- volume 36 has sides with Allen Eager recorded at photographer Milton Green's studio which look like those that were included in the Uptown CD 'Allen Eager In The Land of Oo-Blaa-Dee',

- volume 37 has 3 more tracks from the JATP February 11, 1949 Carnegie Hall concert, plus one 1953 'Dance of the Infidels' with Bud, Mingus and Roach that looks new (but is it?),

- volume 48 has the 1953 Massey Hall concert from the original tape (without overdub by Mingus),

- volume 49 has 3 tracks from the JATP February 11, 1949 concert,

- volume 56 has more unissued items from the Autumn 1943 private recording session at Vic Damon studio.

The rest has appeared elsewhere including on other Philology Bird's Eyes issues.
