Joe Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 I used to have IN THE TOWNSHIPS on disc; exact details escape me, but I believe the issue I owned was on Earthworks (a Virgin subsidiary?). You've heard Pukwana's work on Johnny Dyani's run of Steeplechase sessions? If not. by all means, track down copies of WITCHDOCTOR'S SON and SONG FOR BIKO. Quote

I love Dyani's Angolian Cry too (with Billy Hart). Great combos Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted February 13, 2009 Report Posted February 13, 2009 I used to have IN THE TOWNSHIPS on disc; exact details escape me, but I believe the issue I owned was on Earthworks (a Virgin subsidiary?). Yes, the original version came out on Virgin's budget subsidiary Caroline C1504. I was hanging out in the record shop one day and the Virgin rep came in with the next week's releases. Ralph, the shop owner was looking through them and saying, "yes" and "no". He said "no" to "In the townships" so I said "yes - get one for me". So I got it on the day of release! MG Quote
AllenLowe Posted February 13, 2009 Report Posted February 13, 2009 (edited) though I invariably get bored listening to the length of cuts by these guys, I love Pukwana's playing. One of the fundamental musical experiences of my life was seeing a quartet with Pukwana and Mongheza in London, summer of 1969 (or 70?) at a British jazz club called the Phoenix - Pukwana was particulary nice, very mild guy, smiley, friendly, I remember. Beautiful musicians. Edited February 13, 2009 by AllenLowe Quote
BillF Posted February 13, 2009 Report Posted February 13, 2009 I saw him with Chris McGregor in the late sixties. They were a great band. Quote
relyles Posted February 13, 2009 Report Posted February 13, 2009 I have the two Assaigai recordings on LP. I have never seen either on CD. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 It's a good'n. Not quite 'there' in terms of where they were trying to go, but a cool notch in the McGregor discographical axis. Putting that alongside the Gwigwi is kind of a shock. Quote
Caravan Posted June 24, 2010 Report Posted June 24, 2010 I've a tape (Paradiso, Amsterdam, ca. 1970) with Dudu, Mongs, me, Arjen, Louis... Oh, memories. Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted June 24, 2010 Report Posted June 24, 2010 That tape sounds great! Been listening to Blue Notes for Johnny a bit recently. Dudu is awesome on this - and his sound is really well captured. Some great soprano work on 'Ntyilo, Ntyilo'. Anyone who doesn't have the Ogun box, but who has even the merest suspicion they might be into the music: please get it. It's an extraordinary document. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted June 24, 2010 Report Posted June 24, 2010 that sounds nice, but who are you? What Allen said. Mr. Hazevoet, is that you? Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 24, 2010 Report Posted June 24, 2010 Great to see you on here. Just sent you an email off-board. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 24, 2010 Report Posted June 24, 2010 I'd like to get the duos with John Stevens that P-Vine reissued. They look nice. Quote
