Saw online on the West Coast jazz list serv that Dave Burns, the great trumpeter passed away on April 5th. I sure did love his Vanguard label early 60s LPs. Never did get his due.

Dave spent the later part of his life as a music educator.

He will be missed....

The two Vanguard LPs are great and can be picked up on reissue vinyl I think. RIP - Fine player with a strong element of early bop in his playing. Always enjoyed his sessions with Moody, George Wallington - and with Art Taylor on 'ATs Delight' of course. Sorry to hear he's no longer with us.

Sorry to hear of his passing. One of his early albums marked the recording debut of both Kenny Barron and Herbie Morgan.

i believe dave burns' excellent self-titled album on vanguard marked kenny barron's fourth appearance on record. he debuted on yusef lateef's the centaur & the phoenix and then appeared on two recordings led by his brother, nebluae and modern windows suite.

r.i.p. mr. burns

R.I.P.

I never understood why he wasn't known any better - always found him excellent. Any hint on where to get those Vanguard reissues? (Neglected artist on a neglected label ...)

Will spin some later today - among others, Johnny Griffin's Studio Jazz Party, which was my first encounter with Burns.

Sorry to hear this. His two Vanguard albums (and the Bill English Vanguard, for that matter) should be reissued on CD, but in the current climate...
