This is one of my favorite Larry Young albums. He plays organ on that duo date. Original, beautiful and very evocative session. It also swings. Joe Chambers is a drums master.

I really like this album, too. It's very atmospheric - mostly not a high-energy session except for the last 2 cuts.

Here's the instrumentation:

1) "Hello To The Wind" - JC-piano/LY-organ

2) "The Orge" - JC-piano, tabla, cymbals/LY-organ, synth

3) "Mind Rain" - JC-piano, cymbals/LY-organ

4) "After the Rain" - JC-piano (solo)

5) "Message from Mars" - JC-drums/LY-organ

6) "Rock Pile" - JC-drums/LY-organ

If you can grab this, get it. I don't think it's that easy to find and I also don't believe it has ever been on CD.

You know what's sad? I finally found a SEALED copy of this on Ebay and I bought it last summer and I haven't listened to it yet. I just cannot make myself break the seal... it's a mental thing.

I love Chambers and I love Young but I also love virgin vinyl and I just can't make myself open it.

Am I disturbed?

Not as disturbed as you'll be when you finally hear it and realise how long you intentionally didn't listen to it. ;)

B3 - open that damn thing and put in on. Shit - records were meant to be played. Or find another 'open' one as quick as you can, buy it pronto, and put it on.

FYI, it looks like the going rate for this one in Mint condition is about $20, sealed or not. Couple closed eBay auctions...

Mint, open ($19.90)

Mint, still sealed ($20.50)

I was initially disappointed in this album, because I was hoping for a drum-organ duet-fest, and it's anything but. But when I finally LISTENED to it, I realised just how beautiful it really was. Chambers is one of the most musically astute players out there, not just a "player", but a "mind" as well, and what Larry and him come up with in these performances is deep.

Open it and play it. It's music.

It's on Muse, and that's a label that didn't smoothly survive the transition to CD, to put it mildly.

Yeah, I know that -- but why the hell is it being rereleased on vinyl??? THAT'S FUCKED UP!!!!! (if you'll pardon my 'aric' moment).

I dunno, man. There's some kind of wierdness going on with LP reissues that may or may not be totally sanctioned (wink wink, nudge nudge). Seems like Dusty Groove (the bastards!) seems to offer all sorts of LP reissues that don't show up anywhere else, although I'm not exactly Mr. With It when it comes to the world of turntabledom. All I know is that you can get "new reissue" copies of some things on Muse and other labels there on LP. I got one of Jerome Richardson's GOING TO THE MOVIES from them, and all sonic indicators were that it had been dubbed from an original LP. So draw your own conclusions...

Hah! Everytime I've bought sealed vinyl, I think I'm just going to put it away on the shelf and save it. Unfortunately, the turntable is between the front door and the room I keep my LPs in...

You'll enjoy this LP. Easily the best by Larry at the tail-end of his career and tragic that he passed away not that long afterwards, with signs of the career at last picking up again. This one showed that he could still deliver the goods. Wonderful showcase for the compositional and multi-instrumental talents of Joe Chambers too !
