BERIGAN Posted May 8, 2009 Report Posted May 8, 2009 Looking for Joan Jett's I Love Rock N' Roll on youtube(My best of Joan Jett cd has an lesser version with Sex Pistols members instead of the original) , I saw reference to the original version, by the Arrrows! Huh??? How come I never heard it, or heard of it before??? I am betting folks across the pond here have, but anyone in the states??? And silly me, I thought Soft Sell were the originators of Tainted Love. Someone named Gloria Jones recorded it in 1964. Then redid it in 1976. Never heard either version!!! So, I have admitted my secret shame(s) what songs have people heard that they never knew were covers til years down the road???? Quote
J.A.W. Posted May 8, 2009 Report Posted May 8, 2009 (edited) And silly me, I thought Soft Sell were the originators of Tainted Love. Someone named Gloria Jones recorded it in 1964. As a fan of classic R&B and early Soul I knew that Soft Cell's version was a cover of Gloria Jones' original. The song was written by Four Preps member Ed Cobb Edited May 8, 2009 by J.A.W. Quote
Aggie87 Posted May 8, 2009 Report Posted May 8, 2009 This probably works better for pop songs than jazz. R.E.M.'s "Superman" is a cover of a 1969 song by the band "The Clique". Quote
Noj Posted May 8, 2009 Report Posted May 8, 2009 Naked Eyes "Always Something There To Remind Me" is a cover of a Lou Johnson original. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 8, 2009 Report Posted May 8, 2009 Lots of Muddy Waters' songs were really written by Morgan McKinleyfield. Quote
Noj Posted May 8, 2009 Report Posted May 8, 2009 CCR "Suzie Q" is a Dale Hawkins song. Santana "Evil Ways" is a Sonny Henry tune recorded earlier by Willie Bobo. "Fried Neckbones & Some Home Fries" is a Willie Bobo song also later recorded by Santana. Quote
Noj Posted May 8, 2009 Report Posted May 8, 2009 Dawn Penn "You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)" is an uncredited reggae version of the blues song "You Don't Love Me" by Willie Cobbs. Both are great! Quote
medjuck Posted May 8, 2009 Report Posted May 8, 2009 (edited) In case you think you're hip (like I did) by knowing that Irma Thomas not the Stones first sang Time is on My Side, Bob Dylan on his radio show claims the first version was by Kai Winding! I just checked it out: he's (of course) right-- you can hear a sample of it on AMG. Edited May 8, 2009 by medjuck Quote

I just checked it out: he's (of course) right-- you can hear a sample of it on AMG. You can get the Winding version (and many other fine soul sides) on a superb compilation on Ace entitled "The Jerry Ragavoy Story". Ragavoy wrote the song (under the pseudonym "Norman Meade") and added lyrics at the request of Irma Thomas' producer. No doubt this is where Dylan (or his producer Eddie Gorodetsky) became aware of it. Quote
GA Russell Posted May 9, 2009 Report Posted May 9, 2009 Naked Eyes "Always Something There To Remind Me" is a cover of a Lou Johnson original. I grew up with Sandie Shaw's 1964 version of that song. Hers is the definitive version in my book. I just checked it out: he's (of course) right-- you can hear a sample of it on AMG. Being from New Orleans, I grew up with Irma Thomas's version. Kai Winding's is news to me. Another Stones hit whose original I grew up with but is now forgotten is It's All Over Now, which was done by The Valentinos. I long thought that At Last was Etta James' song, but I heard a version (can't remember who) from the 40s on Sirius a couple of weeks ago. Quote

Brownian Motion Posted May 9, 2009 Report Posted May 9, 2009 Most folks associate the song "Moon River" with Mrs Elva Miller, but it was actually first performed by Audrey Hepburn in the film "Breakfast At Tiffany's". Quote
J.A.W. Posted May 9, 2009 Report Posted May 9, 2009 (edited) Most folks associate the song "Moon River" with Mrs Elva Miller, but it was actually first performed by Audrey Hepburn in the film "Breakfast At Tiffany's". According to a documentary about Audrey Hepburn that I recently watched on German TV her vocal is not in the movie, a stand-in was used because the director, Blake Edwards, didn't think her singing voice was good enough. Jazzmoose Posted May 9, 2009 Report Posted May 9, 2009 That song you're trying to remember right now? Willie Dixon. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted May 9, 2009 Report Posted May 9, 2009 (edited) Naked Eyes "Always Something There To Remind Me" is a cover of a Lou Johnson original. I had no idea who did it first, but that song was so obviously a Bacharach/David number that I assumed it was a remake. From Wikipedia: The Xena: Warrior Princess musical episode "Lyre, Lyre, Hearts on Fire" also featured a thrash metal cover of the song, sung by Jay Laga'aia. Edited May 9, 2009 by Jazzmoose Quote

Jazzmoose Posted May 11, 2009 Report Posted May 11, 2009 I'd never heard of Mrs. Miller before this thread. For this I am extremely grateful. Judging from the entry on Wikipedia, I assume she was the William Hung of her day? Quote
JSngry Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 I did not know that "I Will Follow Him" was originally a French song called "Chariot" until literally just now! Please to don't pee my panties, please! Quote
