This description courtesy Worlds Records...

"Kenny Dorham and Joe Henderson recorded six albums for Blue Note betweem April 1963 and September 1964. This Cd presents a previously unknown broadcast that predates the pair's Blue Note collaborations. In January 1963, the Dorham-Henderson quintet appeared at The Flamboyan located in Queens and named after the casino in Puerto Rico, the club was only open for about a year, but the music lives on."

KD was playing at a very high level during this period, IMO: taking risks, moving towards a more "vocal" style (with a tone sometimes throaty, sometimes almost strangulated)... but without sacrificing the lyricism that was essential to his style. That we get an early glimpse of Henderson is a big bonus.

Hi folks,

On next january 19, 2010, a new CD with Kenny Dorham will be released on the Uptown Jazz label.

Title: Kenny Dorham, The Flamboyan, Queens, New York, 1963

Catalog number: Uptown Jazz 2760

Thanks to Uptown Jazz for a such issue.

Some more patience!

Claude

Yesssssssssssssss!

Hope it's as good as the HARYOU-ACT live set from - when? - 1964?

Why aren't clubs called things like The Flamboyan nowadays?

Wonderful news.

Kenny Dorham was another unique original musician. One note and you knew it was him.

Can't wait to listen to this.

I love live sessions.

Denis

I've heard this already (Bob is a friend). You guys are gonna be happy! :D

I'm looking forward to this. A lot.

Can you share with us the rest of the group, Jack? And can you comment on the sound? Was it original soundboard or was it taped off the air? There have been other KD radio shows released as CDs - Westwind had one, iirc - and between the compression on the broadcast and however many tape generations it went through, the sound was pretty godawful.

I have dats of the originals and think those concerned with pianos and tuning will be bummed. You will still want it but the piano sucks. This is another of those Alan Grant broadcasts. If I can find my files I'll post details.

These new Uptowns are still stuff I worked on years ago.

Of additional interest to Uptown fans is the announcement of the 2nd PJJ Dameronia. There are 3 alternates listed - I picked 4 but Sickler deep sixed one of them. I still regret that.

I'll defer to Chuck on the details, but thought the sound was quite acceptable. Comparable to other Alan Grant shows, which are usually decent, even if the piano is sub-par.
