I know we all take the Grammys seriously 'round here. For my part, I haven't done any music buying this year. so I can only guess at the "goods" and "bads" among the choices. I've heard bits and pieces on Bob Parlocha's show (including the Gambarini, as nauseum), and NTSU is a sentimental fave. Anyone care to comment?

A Grammy for the "best" improvised jazz solo on record in a year? Give me a fucking break.

Really. They need to create some kind of playoff system.

Seriously, it's about "bu$ine$$" & "the indu$try" first, and "mu$ic" about third or fourth.

Leaving aside the inanity of some of the nominees and categories, I can at least recommend these specific albums that are mentioned as records that I liked a lot this year. Opinions may vary.

Jeff Watts, "Watts" Dark Key)

John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, "Eternal Interlude" (Sunnyside)

Clayton Brothers, "Brother to Brother" (Artist Share)

John Patitucci Trio, "Remembrance" (Concord)

Miguel Zenón, "Esta Plena" (Marsalis Music)

Kurt Elling, "Dedicated To You: Kurt Elling Sings The Music Of Coltrane And Hartman." (Concord)

I heard that his ad-libbing on "Regina Coeli" was pretty jazzy... comparable to Coltrane on "Interstellar Space" :g

A couple of you confirmed what I'd hoped to hear: that some reasonably good recordings slipped in along with those chosen for "other" reasons. I've actually heard the "Tain" Watts, and thought it was pretty good, as many of his recordings are.

Still, the Grammy seal of approval ain't exactly the endorsement I'm looking for ;)

I would imagine that anyone who might have taken the Grammys seriously and saw last night's show would think otherwise now.

I found it interesting/sad that the best music was heard when the dead were being honored—what does that tell us?

I was glad to see Clark Terry, but he deserves more than a very quick audience shot.

I had hoped that, with the departure of Pierre Cossette, the production would at least see improvement. It got a lot darker, but—except, perhaps, for the Pink aerial thing—it was a horrid mess.

Other than that, I repeat my comment from the last couple of years...
