BeBop Posted December 3, 2009 Report Posted December 3, 2009 I know we all take the Grammys seriously 'round here. For my part, I haven't done any music buying this year. so I can only guess at the "goods" and "bads" among the choices. I've heard bits and pieces on Bob Parlocha's show (including the Gambarini, as nauseum), and NTSU is a sentimental fave. clifford_thornton Posted December 3, 2009 Report Posted December 3, 2009 A Grammy for the "best" improvised jazz solo on record in a year? Give me a fucking break. Quote
BruceW Posted December 3, 2009 Report Posted December 3, 2009 Holy Smokes, I been gone too long! Quote
Brad Posted December 3, 2009 Report Posted December 3, 2009 Didn't know we took 'em that seriously. Quote
BeBop Posted December 3, 2009 Author Report Posted December 3, 2009 Didn't know we took 'em that seriously. Hopefully no one took me seriously when I suggested we did! Quote
7/4 Posted December 3, 2009 Report Posted December 3, 2009 A Grammy for the "best" improvised jazz solo on record in a year? Give me a fucking break. Pretty much my response too. Quote
neveronfriday Posted December 3, 2009 Report Posted December 3, 2009 Aren't those anti-Oscars prizes called "Razzies" (or sth like that)? Maybe we should have the "Jazzies" as well. Some of the stuff on that list I'd nominate for those. Quote
Free For All Posted December 3, 2009 Report Posted December 3, 2009 A Grammy for the "best" improvised jazz solo on record in a year? Give me a fucking break. Really. They need to create some kind of playoff system. Seriously, it's about "bu$ine$$" & "the indu$try" first, and "mu$ic" about third or fourth. Quote
brownie Posted December 4, 2009 Report Posted December 4, 2009 At least they got that one right... [On Green Dolphin Street Martial Solal, soloist Track from: Live At The Village Vanguard [CamJazz]] Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted December 4, 2009 Report Posted December 4, 2009 It wouldn't be a jazz Grammy list without Metheny in there! Quote
Mark Stryker Posted December 4, 2009 Report Posted December 4, 2009 (edited) Leaving aside the inanity of some of the nominees and categories, I can at least recommend these specific albums that are mentioned as records that I liked a lot this year. Opinions may vary. Jeff Watts, "Watts" Dark Key) John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, "Eternal Interlude" (Sunnyside) Clayton Brothers, "Brother to Brother" (Artist Share) John Patitucci Trio, "Remembrance" (Concord) Miguel Zenón, "Esta Plena" (Marsalis Music) Kurt Elling, "Dedicated To You: Kurt Elling Sings The Music Of Coltrane And Hartman." (Concord) Edited December 4, 2009 by Mark Stryker Quote

[On Green Dolphin Street Martial Solal, soloist Track from: Live At The Village Vanguard [CamJazz]] just what I thought! another one that went unjustly neglected: I heard that his ad-libbing on "Regina Coeli" was pretty jazzy... comparable to Coltrane on "Interstellar Space" Edited December 4, 2009 by king ubu Quote
carnivore Posted December 4, 2009 Report Posted December 4, 2009 The (posthumous) Bob Florence album is very fine indeed Quote

BeBop Posted December 4, 2009 Author Report Posted December 4, 2009 A couple of you confirmed what I'd hoped to hear: that some reasonably good recordings slipped in along with those chosen for "other" reasons. I've actually heard the "Tain" Watts, and thought it was pretty good, as many of his recordings are. Still, the Grammy seal of approval ain't exactly the endorsement I'm looking for Quote
RDK Posted December 4, 2009 Report Posted December 4, 2009 Not any better in pop/rock this year. Hell, Hall & Oates are up for a Grammy! Quote

ghost of miles Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 I've posted the jazz winners on the Night Lights site. Quote
Christiern Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 I would imagine that anyone who might have taken the Grammys seriously and saw last night's show would think otherwise now. I found it interesting/sad that the best music was heard when the dead were being honored—what does that tell us? I was glad to see Clark Terry, but he deserves more than a very quick audience shot. I had hoped that, with the departure of Pierre Cossette, the production would at least see improvement. It got a lot darker, but—except, perhaps, for the Pink aerial thing—it was a horrid mess. Other than that, I repeat my comment from the last couple of years... Quote
sonnymax Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 Didn't watch the awards show (haven't since I was a kid). My thought was, "Well, at least this gives Sangrey another opportunity to worship Beyonce's ass." Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 Anyone got a link that will show the whole set of awards, including Gospel? MG Quote
RDK Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 I'm pissed that Hall & Oates were shut out yet again! Quote
