Bright Moments Posted October 5, 2010 Report Posted October 5, 2010 (edited) If this live date from 1963 dosen't get your juices flowing then you just don't got any juices to flow! Edited October 5, 2010 by Bright Moments Quote
PHILLYQ Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 Etta indeed rocks the house on that one- that voice must have rattled the walls at the club. Whoever I play that for and whatever their taste they're impressed. I love how into it the audience is, too. major major Quote
AllenLowe Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 (edited) recorded by Ralph Bass, a smart fellow. also, notice the bandage on her hand. Can't remember how she hurt it. Edited October 6, 2010 by AllenLowe Quote
Bright Moments Posted October 6, 2010 Author Report Posted October 6, 2010 never noticed the bandage - but i know one thing, she didn't hurt her voice. She is SMOKIN' HOT on this one!!! Quote
jazzbo Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 Looks more like a wrapped strained wrist or hand? I'll have to check this one out one of these days. Quote

AllenLowe Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 there's an interview with Ralph Bass in some book in which he explains about the bandage, but I'm not sure what book it is. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 Been thinking a lot recently 'bout what makes a great live albums, and this one definitely is...more so than any number of albums with bigger rep's. Quote
jazzbo Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 Seized too many diems already this month. Maybe next. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted October 7, 2010 Report Posted October 7, 2010 there's an interview with Ralph Bass in some book in which he explains about the bandage, but I'm not sure what book it is. I've seen it too. I think it's either in "Honkers & shouters" by Arnold Shaw, or the sleeve notes to a compilation set of R&B records made in Nashville (which I haven't got - but I saved it on the computer but can't remember where). MG That wouldn't be the "A Shot in The Dark" Nashvile R&B set by Bear Family? The accompanying book is a fat one but I cannot recall that Etta James was featured there. Neither was she on the Nashville R&B vinyl comps on the Krazy Kat label IIRC. Quote
John L Posted October 8, 2010 Report Posted October 8, 2010 I think that Etta had some tracks on her arms. Could that be it? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted October 8, 2010 Report Posted October 8, 2010 Nah, she'd wear long gloves to cover those and avoid questions. Quote
medjuck Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 Was once invited to a party by an effects house who had done a lot of work on one of our films. I knew we were paying them too much a when I discovered that the entertainment was a SNL regular (who was terrible) and Etta James with her band. It was many years after this recoding but she was still great. What a night: pretty good dinner and then dancing to Etta James. Quote
MartyJazz Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 (edited) Last night watched the DVD of A SINGLE MAN with Colin Firth in an Oscar nomination role, and my wife and I were startled at one point in the film by the power of James singing "Stormy Weather" on the soundtrack. Cali Posted October 15, 2010 Report Posted October 15, 2010 has anyone read her autobiography? Yes, a good read, with lots of 1950's L. A. music history. I really enjoyed it. Quote
