medjuck Posted December 29, 2010 Report Posted December 29, 2010 (edited) I don't think I even saw 10 Jazz concerts this year but amongst the ones I found memorable (literally-- i.e. I remember them) were Ornette Coleman at UCSB Sonny Rollins also at UCSB and Bill Frissell/Paul Motian at The Village Vanguard. (The week when two other guys--playing together-- subbed for Joe Lovano.) Ooops. I forgot local boy Charles Lloyd at The Lobero. Edited December 30, 2010 by medjuck Quote

jeffcrom Posted December 29, 2010 Report Posted December 29, 2010 This thread depresses me - it reminds me that Atlanta has become more of a cultural backwater than ever. Touring jazz musicians of all stripes avoid us. There are only a few shows I went to in Atlanta worth mentioning this year, and my travels didn't take me anywhere to hear good music, except for my annual New Orleans trip. McCoy Tyner Trio (January, Atlanta) Tim Laughlin w/ Jon Erik-Kelso (April, New Orleans) Matt Perrine & Sunflower City (April, New Orleans) Panorama Jazz Band (April, New Orleans) Dirty Dozen Brass Band (April, Atlanta) Janiva Magness (Atlanta, May) Richard Devine/Josh Kay (electronic improvisations) (Atlanta, May) Urs Leimgruber Trio (June, Atlanta) Duet for Theremin and Lap Steel (a local duo that's what it says it is) (October, Atlanta) Not much for a year.... Well, I played some pretty good shows. Quote

sidewinder Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 Kenny Wheeler 80th Birthday Big Band at Southampton was the best concert I saw this year. Followed by David Murray and the Go Kwa Masters at the Bath Fest. Both brilliant gigs. Honourable mention also for Mike Westbrook's Big Band ! Quote

Leeway Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 My New Year Resolution this year is to keep better track of the concerts I have gone to during the year But what comes immediately to mind is, as always, Vision Fest in New York City, in June. Premier DC event: Cecil Taylor at the French Consulate. Honorable mention to Joe McPhee and Trio X at Joe's Emporium. Quote
PHILLYQ Posted December 31, 2010 Report Posted December 31, 2010 Sam Rivers at BMCC in NYC. It wasn't what I expected but it turned our pretty good after all. Rivers was ill and couldn't play that much(what he did play was great), so he had Craig Harris and Steve Coleman as guests. Some inspired music that night. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted December 31, 2010 Report Posted December 31, 2010 Sam Rivers at BMCC in NYC. It wasn't what I expected but it turned our pretty good after all. Rivers was ill and couldn't play that much(what he did play was great), so he had Craig Harris and Steve Coleman as guests. Some inspired music that night. I was at that show as well. Sam is wonderful and I was glad he did play what he did. Sam said he had been in the hospital because he was peeing blood. That didn't sound too good. Quote
bertrand Posted January 1, 2011 Report Posted January 1, 2011 (edited) A lot of great gigs this year. I was especially happy that my little plan (with my friend Brad Linde) to get Freddie Redd and Butch Warren together worked out beyond my wildest imagination - Butch loved playing with Freddie. A big thanks to Brad for organizing it all. Good time to say that they will be gigging again next year: 2/11-12 at Bohemian Caverns, and some other tentative dates. I will keep everyone posted. We need to pack the house that week-end! Bertrand. Edited January 1, 2011 by bertrand Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 well, nobody from here was there (except Elissa) but I will nominate our September 25 concert at 45 Bleecker with Rudd/Ray Anderson/Sandke/Lewis Porter/Darius Jones/Lowe. We got all those other guys beat, hands down. Quote

ejp626 Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 (edited) I'm really struggling to remember what I saw, particularly at the Chicago Jazz Fest (which I personally didn't find all that memorable). Probably the single best was Regina Carter at Chicago's Symphony Center (though unfortunately paired with Esperanza Spalding). Carter was playing off her new CD Reverse Thread, which is pretty interesting. 2. Portico Quartet playing at this real dive in Chicago 3. Dave Holland - Jazz Showcase 4. Rudresh Mahanthappa - Jazz Showcase 5. Either/Orchestra - Chicago Jazz Fest 6. Tatsu Aoki's East-West Orchestra (this probably isn't the official name). Very cool blend of jazz and taiko drumming! Saw some absolutely amazing African groups, including Tinariwen (twice!), Toumani Diabete (also twice in very different settings), and Bassekou Kouyate & his group Ngoni Ba. The classical events were no joke either. We're 2/5 of the way through the Pacifica Quartet's performances of the complete Shostakovich String Quartets. For me personally, the African and classical events were stronger than the live jazz performances, though I enjoyed those as well. Edit: I knew I was forgetting something. J.H.'s awesome list reminded me that I had also seen Konono #1 in Millennium Park. Great show! Edited January 12, 2011 by ejp626 Quote
