I was caught up in the middle of a move, or I would have filed in March (since I received a healthy return from the feds but then still owed for Illinois). I filed federal last Tues. and state last Friday. Nice to see almost no lines. Normally it's round the block on the 15th. I guess that will be the case on Monday!

Filed in February. Even though my taxes aren't really complicated, I use an accountant. Costs me about $150 (deductible, I believe) and he always wrings out a nice little refund for me, so its worth it to me.

I just e-filed in California a minute ago through Turbotax, but am getting an error that my federal return cannot be e-filed because someone else has apparently filed a 1040 already using my SSN. Getting up tomorrow to call the IRS to confirm this. #@$^%$!

It is the tax deadline here in the US. I'm curious when other people in different countries have to file their taxes.

In the UK most people are on the "pay as you earn" (PAYE) system. Income tax is deducted from your monthly or weekly pay before you get it and sent to the revenue by the employer. If you're self-employed you have to make an annual tax return.

We have that also EXCEPT you ALSO have to make an annual tax return anyway. There's no good reason for such a system. We only have it because a) Turbotax and H&R Block and other tax preparers always lobby hard against this kind of simplification and b) the Republican Party wants to make doing taxes as painful a task as possible for average people because it helps their anti-tax jihad. Nice country we've got here, eh?

Same here, and you have to make an annual tax return before April 1 when you have more than one source of income, own a house and things like that. Most people here e-file nowadays.

Well, this is fun. Some asshole did indeed rip off my SSN and seems to have filed a return with it to defraud the IRS out of a refund. Unexpectedly on this week's agenda: call 1) the IRS ID theft group 2) call the FTC 3) call the SSA 4) call the credit bureaus 5) round up copies of my birth certificate and other important ID documents to file with my return.

Goddamn it.

An unexpected BS project to take up all your time. Don't you just love it? Good luck.

Same here in Canada. Our deadline for indivdual tax returns is April 30 (though it may get changed if there's an important hockey playoff game involving the Montreal Canadiens on that date :) )

In the UK the system requires an annual tax filing - although if you are a permie employee and paye via PAYE the tax office with no 'special issues' the tax office usually advise that there is no need to file separately. They make the adjustments via the PAYE.

This is a bit of a change from the situation less than 10 years ago - like Canada all earning adults then had to file tax returns either manual or on-line. They must have got sick of the workload.

Of course, if you are a non-dom or a banker boy, they call round in person with a wheel barrow of free cash and a doffing of caps.. ;)

Quite miss the mad dash annual rush to funnel as much as possible out of the way into RRSPs ! :D

LOL! John, you're killing me! I don't suppose you watched the French debate. I haven't seen anything about it.

I e-filed for the first time this year, with Turbo Tax. It was painless and I got a little bit back, I think eight days later, into my checking account.

Same here, although the state took that and more. e-filing was alright though.

Nope, and I didn't watch the English debate, either. Reports were that the leaders were more relaxed in the French debate which is a bit strange since French is a second language for 3 of the 4. This is the most boring election campaign EVER! I know we shouldn't take democracy for granted, but only two more weeks and it's over, one way or another, thank heavens.

I believe that Harper awarded the Grey Cup last year, didn't he?

I believe so. He's apparently quite the sports fan and is working on a book, about, what else, ice hockey.
