And Hans, yes there's plenty of attitude on posters' part, but is it the moderator's job to sling it back? I see that a lot is all I'm saying. You can't win if you're a moderator I guess. Thanks for all you do.

So members can say anything they like to a moderator, while a moderator should watch his mouth. It doesn't work that way, at least not for me; attitude from members and harassment in PMs drove me away.

I can't find the Slate article to link to it, but the columnist claimed that everyone could be sorted into a chaos Muppet/puppet (Cookie Monster) or an order Muppet/puppet (Bert). Same things play themselves out everywhere (Wiki moderators going around closing down stubs and claiming some articles aren't worth the pixels it takes to put on your screen).

One of the built-in asymmetries is that only Order Muppets would even dream of taking on the role of moderator in the first place. The Chaos Muppets (and in this context I am definitely one) don't see the big deal in a few extra socks (or threads) laying around and do get a bit tired of the nagging. I don't expect this dynamic to ever change. I guess it is up to you how personally you take it.

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough that neither side is "right" or "wrong"* -- and neither can fully understand the reason the other side is so driven to tidy things up or be slobby.

* You can point to forum "rules" to try to win an argument about threads or whatnot, but that isn't really the point that people have vastly different perspectives on such things. And that's why they keep coming back to the surface over and over.

Now wait a second here - this has turned into a thread about duplicate threads, and we've already got one of those:

I'd like to see a pure picture dictionary, where there's no words and everything's in photographic order.

I have an erotic dictionary where everything is in pornographic order.

In a somewhat similar vein, I just ran across this in a new book by Charles Rosen: "When I was writing a review of Alban Berg's correspondence, I remarked to an elderly and very distinguished psychoanalyst, Sophie Lazarsfeld, that I was surprised by how many of Schoenberg's students seemed to enjoy being so badly treated by him. She replied: 'I have no time to explain this just now, but I can assure you that there are a great many masochists and not nearly enough sadists to go around.'"

That's one of the funniest probably-unintentional jokes I've ever heard!

It was intended to be funny (or at least witty) but also was what Lazarsfeld thought to be the truth.

If he has "Politics/Religion" blocked, would his search find it?

Don't know and don't really care. That's no excuse for flinging crap at the walls. Besides, he is aware of the politics/religion forum, could reasonably assume that there might already be a King thread there, thus no mystery. Finally, and speaking only as the annoying moderator I am, if someone locks a thread I've started, the first thing I'd do is think what reasonable cause there might be for this rather than make accusations. If SS is sincerely puzzled, he could have asked a simple question.

Maybe you should figure it out before you start flinging crap at the walls. That is pure bullshit.

And here we go again... Why don't you apply for a job as moderator, so we can start flinging crap at you. Sheesh.

I'm out of here.

Then I don't think it's particularly either, to be honest.

John Cage: "I went to a concert at Town Hall. The composer whose works were being performed had provided program notes. One of those notes was to the effect that there is too much pain in the world. After the concert I was walking along with the composer and he was telling me how the performance had not been quite up to snuff. So I said, 'Well, I enjoyed the music, but I didn't agree with that program note about there being too much pain in the world.' He said, 'What? Don't you think there's too much?' I said, 'I think there's just the right amount.'"

i agree that that Cage example is also another unfunny and unwitty quip. but it's soooooo zen. everything is as it should be, you know? go with the flow. like awesome dude...

was there just the right amount of pain for Rodney King?

The great Dahlia Lithwick.

I'm not going to rant again about what I think our moderators should be prioritizing when they moderate, but I will say this: Larry, if you can't be bothered to think about the technical implications that stem from a decision of THREAD SMASH...you really need to find something else to be doing. Caring about how users experience your systems = Intertubes cardinal rule.

This isn't "users" experiencing Larry's "systems", this is a small-scale collective venture with a few volunteers in key positions doing essential work, and just one person acting as, in effect, treasurer. The rudeness and moderator-baiting works against all of us and not just against some imaginary power. No moderators = no board.

Agreed.

And in the end, what is this about? A thread got locked because it was a duplicate. So what?
