There's a pizza place in Stamford that's jazz- and blues-themed: paintings on the walls, laminated tabletops each devoted to a different artist with magazine excerpts, CD covers, photos, etc. (The music they play, though, is always rock-based: Eric Clapton, Joe Bonamassa, Dave Matthews.) We sat at the Art Blakey table last weekend, and on the tabletop, there was a cover of a Blue Note release from Stockholm, Sweden, 11/23/59. Did this ever come out? A search of Amazon and jazzdisco.org revealed nothing.

The next time you're there I'd ask them who created the fake cover.

Actually, the first thing I'd ask them is why the fuck do they have an Art Blakey table and such shitty music on the stereo.

The Stockholm November 29, 1959 concert did not come out on Blue Note but on Dragon

Dragon reissued it on CD (with the correct year!)

No, this was absolutely a Blue Note cover, both front and back. I guess an open question is in what country was this issued? The next time I go there, I'll try to snap a picture of that part of the table.

Actually, Dan, the next time you're in the area, you should check out the restaurant: Coalhouse Pizza. Really good pizza and excellent menu; don't knock it until you try it.

Those actually are two different concerts. The 1960 concert (December 6) has Bobby Timmons on piano, as opposed to Walter Davis Jr. who was filling in for the '59 tour. The 1959 concert was from November 23. They played Lester Left Town and Night in Tunisia at both concerts. Otherwise, the songs were different.

Interesting - I had always made the same assumption! But you can tell by looking at the photos ...

It took me all these years to realize these were different concerts :o

I have the 1959 vinyl. Will be looking for the 1960 edition!

Thanks for pointing it out!

The 1960 Concert is not shown on the Dragon Records website. Did it ever get a CD release?

As far as I know it was released on LP only.

There was a CD.

Do you have any details, such as the catalogue number? I searched several sites, but it isn't listed anywhere.

[edit]

The LP number was DRLP-137, so I guess the CD number must have been DRCD-137. As I said, I can't find it anywhere.

So the "Svensk Jazzdiskografi" online discography (where these two concerts are listed as two separate entries with two separate and unrelated releases - 1960 on vinyl, 1959 on CD) was right after all!

Had checked there yesterday but a conflicting entry in the Bruyninckx discography (which might have been interpreted as the 1960 date being erroneously listed as such for the LP release and then corrected as a 1959 date for the CD release) made me hesitate ....

You can find it on ebay or amazon, 1995 I think but not sure.

According to Amazon that one has the same tracklisting as the 1959 set, so I guess it's that one, not the 1960 set.

PS it *is* on the Dragon website, in fact, DRCD182.

I'm going to lie down now. ;)

That's the 1959 CD-set, not the 1960 one.

Oh and you can buy both the LP and the CD in their shop. My service to this recording is now over, forever.

You are talking about the 1959 set, not the elusive 1960 one I'm looking for. The latter is not available on CD on their site. Again, DRCD-182 is the 1959 set.

I assumed you mailed Dragon about the one they issued, not the other one.

SO what we have is we think Dragon issued both on LP but only one on CD. The other is on CD though, DIW, I feel sure.

I mailed Dragon about the 1960 set, which I can only find on LP.

Currently listening (and enjoying!) the Dragon LP DRLP137 that is supposed to have the November 23, 1959

blakey_artb_instockho_102b.jpg

but it's Bobby Timmons on piano, not Walter Davis!

Checked with the Lee Morgan Discography that was included in the Lee Morgan book 'Delightfulee' by Jeffery McMillan.

The discography correctly identifies the LP as coming from the December 1960 concert in Stockholm
