mjzee Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 There's a pizza place in Stamford that's jazz- and blues-themed: paintings on the walls, laminated tabletops each devoted to a different artist with magazine excerpts, CD covers, photos, etc. (The music they play, though, is always rock-based: Eric Clapton, Joe Bonamassa, Dave Matthews.) We sat at the Art Blakey table last weekend, and on the tabletop, there was a cover of a Blue Note release from Stockholm, Sweden, 11/23/59. Did this ever come out? A search of Amazon and jazzdisco.org revealed nothing. Quote
brownie Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 The Stockholm November 29, 1959 concert did not come out on Blue Note but on Dragon Dragon reissued it on CD (with the correct year!) Quote

Actually, the first thing I'd ask them is why the fuck do they have an Art Blakey table and such shitty music on the stereo. Quote
mjzee Posted July 4, 2012 Author Report Posted July 4, 2012 The Stockholm November 29, 1959 concert did not come out on Blue Note but on Dragon Dragon reissued it on CD (with the correct year!) No, this was absolutely a Blue Note cover, both front and back. I guess an open question is in what country was this issued? The next time I go there, I'll try to snap a picture of that part of the table. Actually, Dan, the next time you're in the area, you should check out the restaurant: Coalhouse Pizza. Really good pizza and excellent menu; don't knock it until you try it. Quote
John L Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 The Stockholm November 29, 1959 concert did not come out on Blue Note but on Dragon Dragon reissued it on CD (with the correct year!) Those actually are two different concerts. The 1960 concert (December 6) has Bobby Timmons on piano, as opposed to Walter Davis Jr. who was filling in for the '59 tour. The 1959 concert was from November 23. They played Lester Left Town and Night in Tunisia at both concerts. Otherwise, the songs were different. Quote

There was a CD. Do you have any details, such as the catalogue number? I searched several sites, but it isn't listed anywhere. [edit] The LP number was DRLP-137, so I guess the CD number must have been DRCD-137. As I said, I can't find it anywhere. Edited July 5, 2012 by J.A.W. Quote
John L Posted July 5, 2012 Report Posted July 5, 2012 I have the CD, although not with me here. I can give you the catalog number in three weeks. Quote
J.A.W. Posted July 5, 2012 Report Posted July 5, 2012 Just e-mailed Dragon Records about this. Will report back when they reply. Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted July 5, 2012 Report Posted July 5, 2012 So the "Svensk Jazzdiskografi" online discography (where these two concerts are listed as two separate entries with two separate and unrelated releases - 1960 on vinyl, 1959 on CD) was right after all! Had checked there yesterday but a conflicting entry in the Bruyninckx discography (which might have been interpreted as the 1960 date being erroneously listed as such for the LP release and then corrected as a 1959 date for the CD release) made me hesitate .... David Ayers Posted July 5, 2012 Report Posted July 5, 2012 (edited) You can find it on ebay or amazon, 1995 I think but not sure. Edited July 5, 2012 by David Ayers Quote
David Ayers Posted July 5, 2012 Report Posted July 5, 2012 PS it *is* on the Dragon website, in fact, DRCD182. I'm going to lie down now. Quote
J.A.W. Posted July 5, 2012 Report Posted July 5, 2012 You can find it on ebay or amazon, 1995 I think but not sure. According to Amazon that one has the same tracklisting as the 1959 set, so I guess it's that one, not the 1960 set. PS it *is* on the Dragon website, in fact, DRCD182. I'm going to lie down now. That's the 1959 CD-set, not the 1960 one. Quote
David Ayers Posted July 5, 2012 Report Posted July 5, 2012 Oh and you can buy both the LP and the CD in their shop. My service to this recording is now over, forever. The 1960 one is DIW and it is on amazon. Quote

You are talking about the 1959 set, not the elusive 1960 one I'm looking for. The latter is not available on CD on their site. Again, DRCD-182 is the 1959 set. Edited July 5, 2012 by J.A.W. Quote

I assumed you mailed Dragon about the one they issued, not the other one.SO what we have is we think Dragon issued both on LP but only one on CD. The other is on CD though, DIW, I feel sure. Quote

jazzbo Posted July 5, 2012 Report Posted July 5, 2012 http://www.parisjazzcorner.fr/en/dis_fiche.php?ArtNum=53170&LANGUE=uk Still a possibility that 1960 was not on cd. Quote
brownie Posted July 5, 2012 Report Posted July 5, 2012 Currently listening (and enjoying!) the Dragon LP DRLP137 that is supposed to have the November 23, 1959 but it's Bobby Timmons on piano, not Walter Davis! Checked with the Lee Morgan Discography that was included in the Lee Morgan book 'Delightfulee' by Jeffery McMillan. The discography correctly identifies the LP as coming from the December 1960 concert in Stockholm ------------- 1960-12-06 Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers – Swedish Radio Broadcast Lee Morgan (tp), Wayne Shorter (ts), Bobby Timmons (p), Jymie Merritt (b), Art Blakey (ds) Konserthuset, Stockholm, Sweden, December 6, 1960 Along Came Betty (Golson) Dragon DRLP-137 Blues March (Golson) - Lester Left Down (Shorter) - The Theme (Traditional) - Moanin' (Timmons) Unissued A Night In Tunisia (Gillespie-Robin) Dragon DRLP-137 The Theme (Traditional) - Round About Midnight (Monk) Unissued The Summit (Shorter) Dragon DRLP-137 This Here (Timmons) Unissued ---------------- Now will be looking for the 1959 concert Quote
