J.A.W. Posted July 5, 2012 Report Posted July 5, 2012 (edited) DIW 313 oh wait... That's the 1959 CD Edited July 5, 2012 by J.A.W. Quote
David Ayers Posted July 5, 2012 Report Posted July 5, 2012 DIW 313 oh wait... That's the 1959 CD DIW did both, so don't be so sure...According to me, 1959 is DIW 344 and 1960 is DIW 313.I admit though when I searched I found 344 and 313 quoted both ways round (as 59 or 60 interchangably).Look closely here and you'll see my point: http://jazz2002.fc2web.com/J02073.html Quote

John L Posted July 6, 2012 Report Posted July 6, 2012 Currently listening (and enjoying!) the Dragon LP DRLP137 that is supposed to have the November 23, 1959 but it's Bobby Timmons on piano, not Walter Davis! Checked with the Lee Morgan Discography that was included in the Lee Morgan book 'Delightfulee' by Jeffery McMillan. The discography correctly identifies the LP as coming from the December 1960 concert in Stockholm ------------- 1960-12-06 Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers – Swedish Radio Broadcast Lee Morgan (tp), Wayne Shorter (ts), Bobby Timmons (p), Jymie Merritt (b), Art Blakey (ds) Konserthuset, Stockholm, Sweden, December 6, 1960 Along Came Betty (Golson) Dragon DRLP-137 Blues March (Golson) - Lester Left Down (Shorter) - The Theme (Traditional) - Moanin' (Timmons) Unissued A Night In Tunisia (Gillespie-Robin) Dragon DRLP-137 The Theme (Traditional) - Round About Midnight (Monk) Unissued The Summit (Shorter) Dragon DRLP-137 This Here (Timmons) Unissued ---------------- Now will be looking for the 1959 concert OK, I was looking at the Tom Lord discography and things seem to be getting clearer. 1) The first "1959" Dragon LP release was really the 1960 concert with Bobby Timmons (as Brownie indicates above). This was later corrected to 1960, which most likely explains why Brownie was under the impression that there was only one concert. 2) The Dragon CD release of the 1959 concert was indeed the 1959 concert, a different concert. 3) The CD release of the 1960 concert would indeed appear to be on Japanese DIW, not Dragon: (JAP) DIW-813 or DIW-25014, and also Secret 479002. mjzee Posted July 12, 2012 Author Report Posted July 12, 2012 There's a pizza place in Stamford that's jazz- and blues-themed: paintings on the walls, laminated tabletops each devoted to a different artist with magazine excerpts, CD covers, photos, etc. (The music they play, though, is always rock-based: Eric Clapton, Joe Bonamassa, Dave Matthews.) We sat at the Art Blakey table last weekend, and on the tabletop, there was a cover of a Blue Note release from Stockholm, Sweden, 11/23/59. Did this ever come out? A search of Amazon and jazzdisco.org revealed nothing. I've revisited the pizza place and took pictures of the Blakey tabletop. In the center of this photo is the CD I'm curious about (photo of Blakey with cigarette dangling from his mouth): This photo has the back cover. While it's a little blurry, the Blue Note logo can clearly be seen: Anyone recognize this release?? Quote

Yep, it looks like a "Cut-and-paste" job. I checked Michel Ruppli/Michael Cuscuna's Blue Note discography and it doesn't mention a 11/23/59 Art Blakey date that was issued on Blue Note. Quote
JSngry Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 That doesn't say "Wrong note", does it? It sure doesn't say "Blue Note"! Quote
