Hardbopjazz Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 (edited) Sessions originally released under an artists, but today credited to some other artists. One that comes to mine is Cecil Taylor's "Stereo Time." Today it is issued as "Coltrane's Time." I'm sure there are many others. Can you name others? Edited September 4, 2013 by Hardbopjazz Quote
GA Russell Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 I remember that Pete LaRoca's Turkish Women at the Bath was for a while issued under Chick Corea's name. I also remember an album by a singer I had never heard of was re-released under Jimi Hendrix's name ca. 1968. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 Herbie Mann's African Suite was issued under Johnny Rae's name, and later under Herbie Mann's name.Let's get this thread moved to "Discographies" before it is sunk by all the album cover threads. Quote
david weiss Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 Rocky Boyd's date Ease It was later issued under Kenny Dorham's name. I forgot the name of the trombonist, Willie Williams or something like that but his record came out under Freddie Hubbard's name (Groovy) and later reissued under Duke Pearson's name I think...... sgcim Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 I was surprised to find the Eddie Costa Quintet LP now listed under either Art Farmer or Phil Woods' name. Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 Among 50s jazz (and before, of course, i.e. in the pre-LP time) there must be dozens if not hundreds of jazz sessions that fall into this category. Just one example: The Hall Daniels Septet session recorded on Feb. 14, 1955 and released on Jump JLP9. Later reissued on Zim as by Zoot Sims/Dick Nash (with Zoot Sims receiving primary billing, of course). Understandable re-crediting in cases like this (Hall who? ) but still ... Quote
J.A.W. Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 (edited) Dave Bailey's album Reaching Out (JazzTime) became Grant Green's Reaching Out (Black Lion) and Bailey's Bash! (JazzLine) became Tommy Flanagan's Trio and Sextet (Xanadu, later reissued on Prevue). The late tenor saxophonist Frank Haynes was featured on both. Bash! was also reissued as Kenny Dorham's Osmosis (Black Lion). Edited September 4, 2013 by J.A.W. Quote

BillF Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 What were originallyTadd Dameron sessions were later issued under the names of Fats Navarro or Clifford Brown. Let's hope that the recent rise in Tadd's fortunes will see credit given where it's due. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 Several dates that first came out on BN in the brown-cover two-LP series, came out under alternately attributed leadership. Thinking of the Andrew Hill date that came out under Sam River's name, and the Horace Parlan date that came out under Booker Ervin's name. Were there any others on BN that in that 70's 2-LP series with similar changes in who supposedly lead the date (or impied changes)? Quote

Hardbopjazz Posted September 5, 2013 Author Report Posted September 5, 2013 Wasn't Booker Ervin's "Back From The Gig" originally issued under another artists? I want to say Grant Green. Quote
