ghost of miles Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 I interviewed David Baker for a radio special recently and mentioned the George Russell KANSAS CITY date, which has been discussed on this board before. He told me that he thought it had been re-issued recently in a very limited run of 700 copies. I asked if he meant the FIVE SPOT Verve Elite re-issue (of which he's very much aware) and he said no... but I can't find hide nor hair of a KC re-issue on the web. And 700 copies seems like an odd number for a run. Any news on this title, if it might yet surface as an LPR title? Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 I could swear I saw that on CD somewhere... but likewise, can't remember the label or where I saw it. Gots to be out there, though. Quote
brownie Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 Unless that CD has more than what was originally released, I'll stick with the LP. One of Russell's best album with two early compositions by Carla Bley. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 I can't find any evidence that this has come out on cd. I did find a mention of this being "GRP/Impulse" on this page: http://www.georgerussell.com/d.html Which would be appropriate if it had come out between twelve and four years ago maybe. . . but it didn't. PUZZLING. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 Unless that CD has more than what was originally released, I'll stick with the LP. One of Russell's best album with two early compositions by Carla Bley. Back in 2000 when "At the Five Spot" was announced, I asked Ben Young (producer of the reissue) if "In Kansas City" was planned. He said "not currently". He said they decided the Five Spot name had more commercial potential than Kansas City. He did say it was unfortunate because there was "a bunch of extras" from the KC date. JSngry Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 Sorry couw. I just read on another thread that you have personal reasons for not liking nazi references. I didn't know this when I made the post above. No offense intended, and I will delete if you desire. I can respect the delicacy of the subject and want no unnecessarily hurt feelings. Quote

couw Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 so are you taking a vacation because you just finished the warne disk or did you finish the warne disk because you wanted to take a vacation? Quote

Stratusphunk had another one. Dmitry, the Russell in KC LP label credits 'Lunacy' to Dave Baker but the liner notes state that the tune was composed by Carla Bley. And it sounds right. This plus 'Rhymes' makes two Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 Anybody know where in KC it was recorded? That's where I grew up..... It's a reference to "Max's Kansas City," I believe. You know, the arty-beat-wannabee hangout of the '50s in Greenwich Village. Quote
