Tom 1960 Posted January 26, 2015 Report Posted January 26, 2015 I happened to be by the stroke of good luck, on vacation this week. So I will avoid having to deal with the consequences of this huge storm at least when it comes to delivering the mail. The wife and I went out last night to the local grocery store and avoided all the mayhem going on right now. Forecasts are calling for up to 2 feet along the coastline here in Maine. Maybe more? Winds later tonight could exceed 50 mph with whiteout conditions. Power outages are expected. We're hoping for the best but prepared for the worst. The wife is scheduled to work tomorrow/Tuesday, but I'm not encouraging her to travel if the forecasts hold true. How are you guys in the effected areas handling this situation? Please stay safe. Shawn Posted January 26, 2015 Report Posted January 26, 2015 Hope everyone on the east coast stays home off the roads today. Stay warm! Quote
paul secor Posted January 26, 2015 Report Posted January 26, 2015 Tom, As you know, I'm retired from the USPS, so I know well what you have to deal with every winter. Glad you're on vacation. Your old stomping grounds (Hudson Valley is supposed to get hit, but not as hard as the coast. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted January 26, 2015 Report Posted January 26, 2015 I'm already under the brunt of the storm. Quote
Tom 1960 Posted January 26, 2015 Author Report Posted January 26, 2015 An article provided to me by Bill F from the Jazz Wax website: http://www.jazzwax.com/2015/01/boston-blizzard-of-78-playlist.html Quote
BeBop Posted January 26, 2015 Report Posted January 26, 2015 I'm already under the brunt of the storm. I guess I'm a little behind/East of you. Manhattan. Defintiely snowing here. The snow's rising as much as it's falling, if you know what I mean. Quote
Scott Dolan Posted January 26, 2015 Report Posted January 26, 2015 Hard to believe we've barely had an inch of total accumulation so far this season here in mid Missouri. I don't mind snow, but two to three feet is nothing to mess around with. Stay safe up there, folks!! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted January 26, 2015 Report Posted January 26, 2015 I have my doubts about the 2-3 feet business, but nevertheless it's already a madhouse. We're prepared but I did realize we needed more coffee, so dipped out from work to grab a bag and the Whole Foods was basically a thinly-controlled shouting match, with a few shoves thrown in for good measure. People are ridiculous. Quote
Scott Dolan Posted January 26, 2015 Report Posted January 26, 2015 Sounds like your average grocery store in Florida right before a Hurricane makes landfall. Afterwards tends to much worse, though... Quote
BeBop Posted January 26, 2015 Report Posted January 26, 2015 Back to my hotel. Heat. WCKR. Nice. Quote
Guy Berger Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 It's sooooo NYC that there would be a lengthy line at Murray's Cheese right before a big storm. Quote
Scott Dolan Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 Back to my hotel. Heat. WCKR. Nice. WKCR, even... Quote
jlhoots Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 Deliver the mail. Neither sleet, etc., etc. Easy for me to say. Quote
.:.impossible Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 My trusty meteorologist of choice wxrisk.com, a man who abhors the hyperbolic nature with which weather is forecast in this day and age, has this storm at a solid two to three feet. In fact, he has taken to calling Al Roker, NBC, and TWC irresponsible for their confident 7-9 inches after multiple forecast changes on the day of the storm. He is rarely wrong. The reason, it seems, is that meteorology is based on science. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 The reason, it seems, is that meteorology is based on science. He'll never get anywhere in show business with that attitude. Quote
Tom 1960 Posted January 27, 2015 Author Report Posted January 27, 2015 10:30 PM and no snow yet. Winds are picking up though. Quote
T.D. Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 I suggest ignoring all the TV/showbiz weather personalities and learning how to navigate the National Weather Service website. Predicted snowfall for NYC area: http://www.weather.gov/okx/stormtotalsnow The predicted heavy stuff has been shifting slightly East. My area (western Ulster Co., NY, well northwest of the City) is now pegged for only 6-8", which seems too good to be true! Quote
BeBop Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 Back to my hotel. Heat. WCKR. Nice. WKCR, even... I can't get past some long-term mental block against those four letters, in sequence! The sad/bad thing is that I do a lot of work for a huge, global company whose name is four letters, and I keep fouling those up. Woek this morning to less snow on the ground than we had when I went to bed. Fifth and Sixth Avenues, across 34th and 42nd, not a car in sight. No busses or trains. This was, of course, by design. Aside from the need for the snow plows to do their thing, it could be a pretty normal morning here, it seems. Same conditions cars were driving in late yesterday. Quote
paul secor Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 Less snow here (Hudson Valley) than they predicted. 3", maybe 4" at most so far. Another 1"-3" expected. And the snow is very light. Prediction yesterday afternoon was for 12"-18". I'm happy. I know that other areas are getting hit hard. Hope everyone there is safe and warm. Quote
Scott Dolan Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 (edited) My trusty meteorologist of choice wxrisk.com, a man who abhors the hyperbolic nature with which weather is forecast in this day and age, has this storm at a solid two to three feet. In fact, he has taken to calling Al Roker, NBC, and TWC irresponsible for their confident 7-9 inches after multiple forecast changes on the day of the storm. He is rarely wrong. The reason, it seems, is that meteorology is based on science. I can't stomach the "Weather" Channel, but it's looking like your boy ended up being wrong on his forecast. Everything else I agree with him on, though. Edited January 27, 2015 by Scott Dolan Quote
Tom 1960 Posted January 27, 2015 Author Report Posted January 27, 2015 A foot at least since 4 am this morning with 2 to 3 foot snow drifts. No hoax here. Quote
ejp626 Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 A foot at least since 4 am this morning with 2 to 3 foot snow drifts. No hoax here. Not a hoax exactly, but the worst blizzard since 1882? Hardly.I well recall the previous time it was going to be Snow-maggedon in NYC and they got 3 or 4 inches, if that. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 I've got about 2 feet but it's really tough to tell because it's so light and fluffy that the wind is blowing it into drifts. I guess 2 feet would be about average. Quote
