ThatĀ“s one of my favourite Baker records, I like the really long and extended tracks on all records from that NDR series. Chet Baker ist in top form, and Phil Marcovitz is a great pianist and ideal partner for Chet. And itĀ“s great to have the legendary Mr. Rassinfosse on bass, and a rare occasion to hear Chet Baker with a drummer. IĀ“m a drums freak and actually Baker is the only musician IĀ“d listen to when playing without drums. I hope there will be further albums from that NDR Uncle PoeĀ“s Series, I allready have most of them with exception of those who are not typical jazz musicians so it might be music IĀ“m not listenig to..... The first two batches came within a couple of months, the second of these in early 2018 - so hopefully this not a sign the series is over (as contradition to The New Woody Shaw Quintet āā Vol.1 At Onkel Pƶ's Carnegie Hall Hamburg 1982) .... HutchFan Posted January 3, 2019 Report Posted January 3, 2019 Charlie Mariano - Crystal Bells (CMP, 1980) withĀ Charlie Mariano (as, ss, nadaswaram, bamboo fl); Stu Goldberg (p, el p, synth); Gene Perla (b); Don Alias (d, perc, cga, vo) On this one, Mariano is pairedĀ with the excellent Stone Alliance PerlaĀ & AliasĀ rhythm team. Add Goldberg's synth andĀ the music sounds sort of like Weather ReportĀ -- but not in aĀ derivative sense. It's just similarlyĀ expansive, world-fusion-y, percussive, and electric. ... Or, as Forrest Gump would say, "I like it a lot." Quote
HutchFan Posted January 3, 2019 Report Posted January 3, 2019 More Mariano on CMP: Philip Catherine, Charlie Mariano, Jasper van 't Hof - Sleep My Love (CMP, 1979) As the title and cover image imply, this music is dreamy and floating -- veryĀ different from Crystal Bells. Earlier in the Seventies, these guys billed themselves (and recorded) as Pork Pie. Not sure why they dropped the name for this record. Quote

Video says it's part 1 of 2 butĀ apparently part 2 is "blocked" in Australia. You might have no problem though. The title to search via youtube is - Kenny Wheeler (2/2) [BBC Omnibus 1977]. Alternatively, I found a different link that should work. Both parts included here, as well asĀ a nice interview with Wheeler. https://www.rockpeaks.com/video/w/Wheeler-Kenny/Omnibus-UK-TV-series-1977/documentary-BBC-Omnibus-22 Also, I then ended up enjoying another interesting video with Norma Winstone & Evan Parker sharing memories about Wheeler. "Song for Someone" album is even mentioned (very briefly). Ā Edited January 3, 2019 by Marzz Quote

Interestingly, looks like the late Alan Downey is in the trumpets but donāt think he is credited on the album. Same for Henry Lowther. Dave Horler on valve trombone was also there on those 75th and 80th birthday concerts. Alfie ReeceĀ on tuba was on āWindmill Tilterā ! Edited January 3, 2019 by sidewinder Quote
