jazzbo Posted September 11, 2019 Report Posted September 11, 2019 Listening again to Hank Mobley "Workout" Blue Note Japan RVG LP facsimile cd. Listening yesterday led me to remember how often my best and oldest friend and I listened to this in the early 'nineties and marveled at the music and the sound. That's what I love about the quality of my system--I can instantly connect to memories and the music, the better the system becomes the deeper and faster the connection. Reminding me yes, I'm an audiophile, but I really am driven by music. I don't know what I would do without music in my life. I'd be someone completely different, that's certain. .. . Quote
JSngry Posted September 11, 2019 Author Report Posted September 11, 2019 A masterpiece, no doubt! Quote
jazzbo Posted September 11, 2019 Report Posted September 11, 2019 Now on to Tina Brooks "True Blue" Blue Note Japan RVG LP facsimile cd. A superb session. Quote

jazzbo Posted September 11, 2019 Report Posted September 11, 2019 Another Japanese RVG, Kenny Dorham "Whistle Stop" Quite an interesting session, and KD and Mobley always sound good together, with a long history of playing side by side. Followed by Joe Henderson "Mode for Joe" Blue Note, US RVG cd this time. Quote

duaneiac Posted September 11, 2019 Report Posted September 11, 2019 Say what you will about the advisability of "jazzing up" songs like "Michael Row The Boat Ashore" or "Polly Wolly Doodle", Terry Gibbs swings his butt off on each tune here. Some of his bandmates (including Jimmy Raney and Alice McCleod) seemed, at times, to lack faith in the album's concept, but Mr. Gibbs was all in and he simply used those tunes as fuel for his fire. Not a great album, but a fun one primarily due to Mr. Gibbs' commitment. Quote
HutchFan Posted September 11, 2019 Report Posted September 11, 2019 More John Stowell . . . David Friesen - Waterfall Rainbow (Inner City, 1977) Quote
JSngry Posted September 11, 2019 Author Report Posted September 11, 2019 Freddie Hubbard plays pretty for the people. Ricky Ford plays along. On Baystate. Delicious! Quote
JSngry Posted September 11, 2019 Author Report Posted September 11, 2019 Far from essential, but equally far from unpleasant! No piano, please note, just organ. Quote
JSngry Posted September 11, 2019 Author Report Posted September 11, 2019 Ladies and Gentlemen, THIS IS A LINER NOTES!!!! Quote

HutchFan Posted September 11, 2019 Report Posted September 11, 2019 Arthur Blythe - Focus (Savant, 2003) I love the sound of this ensemble -- with Tsilis' concert marimba (no vibes) and Stewart's tuba. Far from a garden-variety "alto with rhythm" date. Quote

Grown Folk Music indeed.. 32 minutes ago, HutchFan said: I had no idea that record existed, never seen it before. And that's an impeccable rhythm section! That Baystate catalog is ripe for a systematic issuing in the US, or could be, As it is (or was)...the Internet has been my friend, it and Dusty Groove from time to time. Quote

JSngry Posted September 11, 2019 Author Report Posted September 11, 2019 51 minutes ago, mikeweil said: Was that reissued on CD? Not that I am aware of. It's a really nice period piece, kinda modeled after the Charles Lloyd records of the time, maybe. Only a LOT friskier. That rhythm section (none of whom I recognized without some digging) is all in, as is Watts. I'm not at all an Ernie Watts fan, but this was a fun listen. I found a LP copy in "acceptable" condition for a good sigle-digit price, so keep an eye out. Quote
