Jim Duckworth Posted April 30, 2020 Report Posted April 30, 2020 (edited) I made a playlist of the Roulette Basie band playing tunes from the Old Testament Basie band-from discs 5,6,and 7. Edited April 30, 2020 by Jim Duckworth Quote
JSngry Posted May 1, 2020 Author Report Posted May 1, 2020 I'd have liked the program better with fewer standards in the mix, but oh well. Now having said that.. 2 minutes ago, aparxa said: So Long, Tony! Oh no! Quote
Justin V Posted May 1, 2020 Report Posted May 1, 2020 (edited) I was in a Jackie Mac mood, so why not Jackie Mac with such an illustrious band? I hope Roy is doing okay during the pandemic. He is, like always, in crackling form here. I need to pick up Vol. 1. Edited May 1, 2020 by Justin V Quote

Gheorghe Posted May 1, 2020 Report Posted May 1, 2020 This is my favourite late 70´s Messengers record, I really loved that group with Valery Ponomarev, Dave Schnitter, Bobby Watson, James Williams , Dennis Irwing, and especially that fast version of "The Song is You" and the James Williams originals...... Not sure if the first Blakey group I saw had Ponomarev or Bill Hardman on trumpet but otherwise the lineup was the same. Bobby Watson very much featured as Musical Director. I need to get hold of vinyls of those Concords and kicking myself for passing in the past ! Edited May 1, 2020 by sidewinder Quote
jazzbo Posted May 1, 2020 Report Posted May 1, 2020 (edited) Lee Morgan "Charisma" Blue Note "24 bit by RVG" Japan LP Facsimile cd. The only gatefold LP facsimile cd in the series I believe. Lee, Jackie, Hank, Cedar, Paul and Billy. Great music. Followed by Freddie Hubbard "First Light" CTI/Legacy edition. Freddie keeps growing on me over the years. For a long time I thought he was a technical wiz but didn't quite feel his playing. That has slowly changed. I get a lot more satisfaction out of his albums now. Edited May 1, 2020 by jazzbo Quote
Justin V Posted May 1, 2020 Report Posted May 1, 2020 (edited) Although Steve Davis and Eric McPherson have since become well-known, pianist Alan Jay Palmer, trumpeter Raymond Williams and bassist Phil Bowler also do good work here. Edited May 1, 2020 by Justin V Quote
