I was fairly stunned at how much I liked the saxophone only albums, as I was never big on the World Saxophone Quarter, but Hemphill calling all the shots brings a great grace to the proceedings. Nicely done Sir. I think the sax only releases were some of my first Hemphill working backwards in my early Jazz days from Marty Ehrlich. With you on WSQ too. Quote

I also enjoy that [Hemphill Black Saint / Soul Note] box, generally listen all in one shot. Never heard much of the WSQ, got the impression it wouldn't be to my taste. Edited May 8, 2020 by T.D. Justin V Posted May 9, 2020 Report Posted May 9, 2020 (edited) Luke Carlos O'Reilly - Living in the Now: I saw O'Reilly on organ with Red Holloway about 6 months before Holloway passed (with Teodross Avery on board as well). O'Reilly and company remind me that I need to spend more time checking out the current Philly cats. Edited May 9, 2020 by Justin V Quote

gmonahan Posted May 9, 2020 Report Posted May 9, 2020 I got this one toward completing my collection of the great Mr. Five by Five, and he's wonderful, but I wonder if there was ever a more underrated player than Budd Johnson. His soprano on this record is wonderful. Quote
