Justin V Posted September 22, 2020 Report Posted September 22, 2020 (edited) Disc 1 Up next: I forgot that it was Slide Hampton on trombone. I actually assumed it was Steve Davis, who has popped up everywhere during his career. Edited September 22, 2020 by Justin V Quote
HutchFan Posted September 22, 2020 Report Posted September 22, 2020 John Patton - Memphis to New York Spirit (Blue Note, rec. 1969/70) I sure do wish Patton would've had an opportunity to continue making records into the 1970s. Everything from That Certain Feeling up to this one: They all have something -- hard to put a finger on it -- that's somehow unexpected, definitely not pro-forma. They're even a little "off." And I mean that in the best possible way. Marvin Cabell's and Blood Ulmer's contributions are certainly part of the equation. But Patton was charting the course and steering the ship, no? Quote
sidewinder Posted September 22, 2020 Report Posted September 22, 2020 (edited) “Split” I’ve always thought of them being influenced a bit by the more psychedelic acts on Motown - Undisputed Truth, Norman Whitfield era Temptations etc. Edited September 22, 2020 by sidewinder Quote
mikeweil Posted September 22, 2020 Report Posted September 22, 2020 https://www.discogs.com/Tito-Puente-Hong-Kong-Mambo-The-Very-Best-Of-Tito-Puente/release/9654255 Acutally a reissue of Dance Mania with two outtakes added, one of which was never issued anywhere else. I just compared eight different reissues of Dance Mania's opening track, El Cayuco - they all sound slightly different, although most were remastered by Dick Baxter. Quote
GA Russell Posted September 22, 2020 Report Posted September 22, 2020 My favorite song when I was in high school was Constant Rain from Brasil '66's second album Equinox. So twice a year I pull out the album and give it a spin. So today's the day. Quote

Today I received a set of 4 reissues from Japanese Savoy which collects I think (I still haven't heard them) this material. They're these: I wanted this, but didn't find it: Quote

I barely know that music. Sounds like new turf (for me) for exploration. Thanks. Also, did you ever find out more about your LP? Is it the only one in existence? 5 minutes ago, soulpope said: A beauty .... No doubt. Quote

That is something! What a find! ... Not to mention, it's probably worth scads more than you paid for it. NP: Sonny Stitt and Don Patterson - Brothers-4 (Prestige, rec. 1969) Quote

Justin V Posted September 23, 2020 Report Posted September 23, 2020 This is a bittersweet listen. The last time I saw Larry Willis play, I talked to him and said that he should come back and do a solo concert. He said that we'd see what the future held. 4 months later, he passed away. Quote
