Kenny Wheeler's sound fills up so much space -- in a good way --  that this quartet comes off sounding like a huge ensemble.

 I love Kenny's sound. A great writer too.  I miss seeing him play which I was lucky enough to do on many occasions in many different line-ups. Not that one though.

You're lucky!  I never had an opportunity to see Wheeler perform.

Speaking of...

The only time I saw Kenny was in his early days in the UK with fellow Canadian Art Ellefson in a small group drawn from the Dankworth orchestra led by Eddie Harvey. The date was about 1962 and the venue a club in Leeds.

Atomic / School Days - Nuclear Assembly Hall (Okla, 2004)

Nice to reconnect with this one. It has aged well. Not dissimilar to Chicago Octet/Tentent in style, but more easily digestible.
