Rabshakeh Posted March 5, 2021 Report Posted March 5, 2021 (edited) Now on Night Fire (Black Saint, 1981) by the John Carter Quintet. Possibly even better than the Roots & Folklore records that came after? I know those well but I'd never listened to Night Fire before now. It has a similar feeling, like the listener is watching an unfolding chamber drama. Roberto Miranda on bass is just incredible. Edited March 5, 2021 by Rabshakeh Quote

Sorry never to have seen him play. Was due to hear him in Wigan in the summer of 2016, but sadly Louis didn't live that long. Edited March 5, 2021 by BillF Quote

Maybe it was being in Tokyo or something but he's having fun. Gomez is kind of a drag here but Morell & Evans are in good form. Listened a bit last night. Very well recorded -- balance between Evans and Gomez is ideal, for once there's just right amount of space between them, albeit Gomez is still Gomez; Evans is in fine form for that period; Morell is just Morell, or so it seems to me. It must have been just before Dick Pearce joined that lineup because I think it was just the once. Quote

I guess I should qualify "funky" as in "funky for Morell." It was unexpected from my perspective. Not a bad drummer, but on this one he seemed to let loose a little more. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 5, 2021 Report Posted March 5, 2021 Cal Massey "Blues to Coltrane" Candid/Solid Records Japan mono cd. Sounds so good compared to my earlier version. There should have been more Massey led sessions in the past. He was an interesting writer. Quote

jazzbo Posted March 5, 2021 Report Posted March 5, 2021 I am sure it does. I have only been able to compare one of the new Japanese cd reissues to a US Candid LP and that was mono and stereo in the mix as well but the new ones sound far more like the LPs to me than the cd versions I've had before. sidewinder Posted March 5, 2021 Report Posted March 5, 2021 I think the LP version I have might be a 90s German pressing. Never heard any of the CD versions. Quote

I found that Morell let loose a good deal on the two recent Resonance label Evans releases -- "Live at the Top of the Gate" and "Evans in England." Interesting interviews with Morrell and Gomez in the latter set's booklet. Quote

I stuck with the DeJohnette sets, of which Another Time was my favorite of the two. Gomez, of course, is ubiquitous across them all. Quote

Don Posted March 5, 2021 Report Posted March 5, 2021 (Weirdly, the version of this I have in the Coltrane 'Interplay' box set doesn't list McLean in the session notes.) Quote
