Rabshakeh Posted August 1, 2021 Report Posted August 1, 2021 With the Tenors of Our Time by The Roy Hargrove Quintet (Verve, 1994) This album has aged a hell of a lot better than most major label jazz records of its time. Just finished this absolute beast: Jaki Byard Quartet - Live! Vol. 1 Quote
Bluesnik Posted August 1, 2021 Report Posted August 1, 2021 I finally got a CD copy of this, and it' so good. Just the piano. Oh, and on my way to find the cover I stumbled upon a row of very sexy ladies. Apparently there's also a firm of lingerie called Westward Bound. Quote

Continuing the Picasso theme, sheer big band artistry. Beautiful arranging, notable solos by Jack Sheldon and, of course, the incomparable Mel Lewis. Quote

Vol. 2 and The Last From Lennie's to complete the set. When I was working on the liner notes for the latter CD, the label sent me the remaining unissued music from the date, which will never see the light of day. It included several rehearsals of "King David" and other tracks from the gig. Quote

riddlemay Posted August 2, 2021 Report Posted August 2, 2021 The way this track builds is, to me, the apotheosis of Billy Byers and the Basie band. Quote
