Niko Posted December 12, 2021 Report Posted December 12, 2021 always have to think about Mike Zwerin's MF chapter when I see the name... after half a page of talking about Frank Sinatra and Buddy Rich at the beginning of the chapter, MZ writes: "You may consider Frank Sinatra and Buddy Rich oblique leads into a chapter on Maynard Ferguson. Like Buddy, with some taste and humbleness, Maynard would have been a genius. And both of them have basically never forgiven the Creator for not creating them as Frank Sinatra." Quote

I can't get over how much older Stan Kenton looks like he should be hosting a dodgy mid 1980s British light entertainment show on ITV. It's almost like a portrait done in the last couple of years of his life, after his disastrous head injury in 1977, and consequent severe decline in health, which led to his death in 1979. Now: Obscure obviously, but the Canadian reedman is the subject of Mark Miller's recent book, "Oneliness", which I hope to read soon. Quote
