Chuck Nessa Posted April 11, 2022 Report Posted April 11, 2022 Haven't pulled this one out in years and was surprised by the bands - Farmer & Gryce I remembered, but Jug, Cecil Payne, Henderson Chambers & my old friend George Brown had faded into the cobwebs. Quote

jazzbo Posted April 11, 2022 Report Posted April 11, 2022 Billie Holiday in her final album release, on the MGM label, "Billie Holiday" aka "Last Recording." Like "Lady in Satin" this is arranged and conducted by Ray Ellis, but it has a jazzier backing and feel. And though much is made, perhaps rightly, about the damage to Billie's voice, she still inhabits these songs and lets us into her world of feeling and texture. What a master she was from her first recordings on. Quote

jazzbo Posted April 11, 2022 Report Posted April 11, 2022 This is the most recent release, "Planetario da Gave" on Far Out Records 2 cd. Playing a Hermeto Pascoal album for the first time is a lot like Gump's box of chocolate. You really don't quite know specifically what to expect. From a February 1981 appearance by Pascoal with "O Grupo" . . . and an exciting listen. Quote

jazzbo Posted April 11, 2022 Report Posted April 11, 2022 Another classic that needs re-visiting. There was a time last decade when I played this every Sunday. Sounds really really good on this SACD, even though I might prefer the alternate mix that was released on a deluxe 2 cd edition. Quote

Peter Friedman Posted April 11, 2022 Report Posted April 11, 2022 (edited) I first heard this album when first issued about 1959 or so. Didn't care for it then. But now many decades later I decided to give it a listen again. It began (for me) very dull and cold sounding, with no jazz feeling. Things improved after about ten minutes into the Concerto. Cannonball and Art Farmer's playing was warmer and their solos had a jazz sensibility. Brooks deserves credit for attempting something different from the usual jazz albums being produced. So on the whole a mixed bag. There was not enough music that appealed to me beyond a modest level. It is doubtful that this is an album I will choose to listen to again.
