Don Ellis- How Time Passes (Candid, 1960)

How_Time_Passes.jpg

My first listen to this one. I'm quite struck by how much it anticipates some of the Second Quintet's most famous moves, but also by how much less I enjoy it than those later records.

Charles Mingus "Tijuana Moods" Jazz Connoisseur Legacy Sony cd

Listening to the trio version of "Dizzy's Moods" made this spin inevitable. . . .

Listening to the European cd from 2016. I have a handful of versions of this one. . . been listening to it for four decades now.

One of those records that damn near everybody can enjoy to one degree or another. Me myself, I never give it the "one and done treatment", it plays more than a few time before it goes out.

What tunes are on that album ? Fine photo of Bud. From the Golden Circle 1962 I think....

Many of my favourites: "Celia", "I'll Keep Loving You", "So Sorry Please", "Strictly Confidential", "Oblivion" and some by LaVerne.

Now playing:

With the same (great) band (+ vibraphonist Al Francis), I think "New Ideas" (Prestige, 1961) is much more enjoyable :)

Sublime ....

Yes!  :tup

I've only recently found my way into Sloane's music.  I'd heard it before, but it hadn't clicked.  Now, it has.

Funny how that happens.

I really dare to state this is a modern jazz piano masterpiece.

I struggled with it a bit. I found that I enjoyed Sorey's drumming the most.

I agree. I like New Ideas a whole lot more.
