I had planned to but things got in the way I did, with Alexander Hawkins of this parish. I really enjoyed it. Very moving. Edit: I should add, and not just because one of the duo might be reading this, that I thought that the combination of Mitchell and Hawkins really worked well for both, and brought out something really magical. I thought that might be the case, glad you enjoyed it so much. Maybe they'll record, I hope so. @Alexander Hawkinswhat say you? I saw her there solo and with Mark Sanders a few years back and it was sensational. It should have been a trio with Joelle Leandre who cancelled. The audience that night was embarrassingly small, perhaps because of Leandre's non appearance Edited October 3, 2022 by mjazzg Quote
jazzbo Posted October 3, 2022 Report Posted October 3, 2022 (edited) Skip Walker "Tina's Contemplation--A Reflection on the Genius of Tina Brooks" Skip Walker Music cd The genius of saxophonist Tina Brooks? Well maybe. I do love his music. This drummer led trio produced a nice session. Edited October 3, 2022 by jazzbo Quote

It should have been a trio with Joelle Leandre who cancelled. The audience that night was embarrassingly small, perhaps because of Leandre's non appearance I have always thought that Mitchell was a great player with a really interesting and personal sound on her flute, but I think that some of her earlier records sometimes adopted ensemble approaches that, whilst good, perhaps didn't show off how unique her playing is. I first fell really in love with Mitchell's music when I listened to the solo record I posted above. I could listen to that record all day. This was similarly excellent, with the piano opening up new possibilities for the flute. It reminded me a lot of Hemphill, Newton and very late Debussy, whilst still being it's own thing. Two players who work beautifully together. I would love to hear a duo album. Sadly, OTO was not full last night either, although it did have a quite intense and studious small audience feel, which was nice. Edited October 3, 2022 by Rabshakeh Quote

I can see not knowing Nakamura, as he is a relative newcomer, but both Kikoski and Allen have been on a lot of recording dates over the years. Allen has toured as a leader quite a bit too. This does sound intriguing. Quote
JSngry Posted October 3, 2022 Author Report Posted October 3, 2022 Kikoski can be pretty interesting. His most interesting playing, imo, is on some Monday Michiru albums, but his other works also show him to be a personal thinker more often that not. Check him out on this one, where he finds a way to "merge" the techniques of Ahmad Jamal & McCoy Tyner. Quote
jazzbo Posted October 3, 2022 Report Posted October 3, 2022 David wowed me when I saw him with the Mingus Big Band. Quote
Rabshakeh Posted October 3, 2022 Report Posted October 3, 2022 I think I've heard Carl Allen on a few thinks, and Kikoshi on fewer, but I don't think they're names that I see regularly. Quote
JSngry Posted October 3, 2022 Author Report Posted October 3, 2022 Kikoski is on a lot of records, but not as many as some other people. David Kikoski - Wikipedia On the latest Monday album, he plays accordion, which by itself doesn't really mean anything, but it does show that he's not one of these "retro" guys who is going to sit there all of their life and regurgitate until they die. I'm a fan of that, just in principle! Quote

jazzbo Posted October 3, 2022 Report Posted October 3, 2022 A friend of mine sent me this and I'm spinning the first disc, the original release. Very late Elvis, recorded in Graceland in a home studio. Interesting. Elvis Presley "Way Down in the Jungle Room" Sony/RCA 2 cd set. Quote

FWIW, I first became aware of both Kikoski and Moore hearing them with Roy Haynes at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago in August 1986, about five months before 623 C Street was recorded. (Ed Howard was the bassist with Haynes' quartet.) Edited October 3, 2022 by Mark Stryker Quote
