Prompted by Mike Weil's AOM thread, I have been listening to a string of mid-50s-and-onwards Ben Webster discs during the last two days:

👍 All great . Teddy Wilson's playing is marvelous on the Ben and Teddy CD.

Been too long since I spun this one. One of the best Mingus from one of his strongest periods of music-making.

“A Modern Jazz Symposium of Music and Poetry with Charlie Mingus” Bethlehem/Solid Records Japan cd.

Definitely very under-rated and by one of his best lineups. Was listening to the recent 2LP set the other day. With extra material to the original Bethlehem LP and it sounds way better too, in stereo and with the reverb taken off.

This cd is the best I've heard this release; I don't buy modern vinyl as a general rule so haven't heard that reissue. My cd copy only lacks the "Jazz in the City" single edit, which I can live without, and I don't hear reverb on this mastering.

Great music! This is really my favorite period of Mingus.

I compared the new one with an original 1957 Bethlehem mono vinyl and it was a very significant improvement, surprisingly so. The LPs have been issued by a UK company and I think they have used original masters, adding alternates and a very good extra track (‘Billie’s Bounce’) to the second LP. That ‘Scenes in the City’ alternate is sort of interesting too, put together for US juke box play I believe.

Okay, I may have been looking at a different 2022 LP release.

Cool. I'm quite happy with this 10 track stereo cd I have (includes "Billie's Bounce")--gave away two earlier cd versions.

I really like that New Land edition too. Bodes well for the Dorothy Ashby box that they're releasing soon

Not into Dorothy Ashby so will be skipping that one but yes, New Land did a good job on this one. I might be tempted with their Howard McGhee reissue.

Some potent music here.  It packs a wallop.

I am waiting for ‘Time For A Change’ to be reissued on vinyl. There’s only one copy available on discogs and some clown wants £155 for it !

That is ridiculous.

Now switching gears a bit:

Rouse’s very best date as a leader imo. I love every single track on that album. Great band as well!

Good album!

This brings back memories of my top BFT guessing accomplishment, which I'll likely never equal 🤣 ...felser included a track in one of his BFTs. Not knowing of the recent reissue he expected nobody to guess it...having purchased the reissue a few months prior, I immediately recognized the tune.
