Paul Winter – Callings

R-1889777-1259234939.jpg.415c75dadd9ec4ff9dbb81ffbdcf10be.jpg

Being a child of the digital age means that it is only today that I noticed that the cover of this record has Paul Winter lurking sinisterly behind the rainbow. I had naively assumed it was another sea lion, perhaps part of a mutually supportive three lion pride of sea lions.

thinking of lists, a really curious one are the New Age Grammies from 1987 to now, with winners like Pat Metheny, Yusef Lateef, Jack deJohnette, Paul Winter of course, Stewart Copeland...

Lewis / Ewell Big 4 is the only New Age we need.

How exactly are they private?  Studio sessions Duke paid for but were never issued? Unissued/rejected tracks from known LPs?  Been listening to more Gonsalves lately and this makes me curious.

Pulled from a "stockpile" of recordings that Ellington produced and recorded over the years funded from his own pocket and not officially released before this series. Not unissued or rejected  tracks, but full-fledged recordings made for various reasons--try out new arrangements, showcase new compositions, feature an artist, etc.

Marcus Roberts Trio “Time and Circumstance” Columbia cd

Haven’t spun this one in a few years. Such an amazing pianist. I vividly remember seeing him perform at Antone’s in Austin. Piano master!

More from Masahiko Togashi:

with Masahiko Satoh, Sabu Toyozumi, and others

Like Togashi's Guild for Human Music, Essence was released on the Denon Jazz imprint.  I'm curious: Does anyone know who owns the rights to these recordings now?  Have they been pulled under the new Concord umbrella / conglomerate?

I'm only asking because there were many outstanding releases on the label.  (And it's not just Japanese jazz.  Don't forget: Max Roach Quartet - Live in Tokyo, Vols. 1 & 2.)  These LPs deserve to be reissued; in fact, an entire reissue series dedicated to Denon Jazz would be fantastic.

What about Solid/Ultra-Vybe?  They could do it.  This stuff would be right up their alley.

I realize that it's unlikely.  But I can dream, can't I ?!?

Dan - If you want to dig into Gonsalves' playing, these Private Collection recordings are the MOTHERLODE.  He's featured throughout.

Jack Chambers' collection of Ellington essays "Sweet Thunder" has a good chapter on the stockpile.  IRRC a few of the self financed sessions were released on major labels during EKE's lifetime.

Marcus Roberts “Blues for the New Millenium” Columbia cd

c32a5100358602ad67b68d17e6c29a07fd6e8056

It now IS that new millenium. . . and I’ve had the blues. Managing them well though.

This is giving me memories of my 'nineties Austin life with my late first wife and our pets. For a spell there life was as good as it gets at home. I was listening to a lot of “Chicago Style” jazz at the time based on the old New Orleans jazz and blues.
