jazzbo Posted February 29, 2024 Report Posted February 29, 2024 (edited) Mingus Big Band “Tonight at Noon” I pulled a handful of Mingus Big Band cds from the shelves and this is the first one to spin. I forgot Elvis Costello appears on this one. . a surprise. Nice vocal turn, sort of a Jackie Paris feel which is appropriate. Good sound on this as well. I love my system–I’m getting sound I never dreamed I’d have at home. Edited February 29, 2024 by jazzbo Quote

jazzbo Posted February 29, 2024 Report Posted February 29, 2024 Mary Lee’s Corvette “Blood on the Tracks” Something a little different for me–a 2002 live recording covering Dylan’s album. A pretty straight-forward interpretation, nice to hear. One of my brothers would love this. . I’ve ordered him a copy. I always thought a line from “Idiot Wind” resonates wth me “I can’t help it if I’m lucky.” She does a good renditon of “Idiot Wind” here. Quote

Kevin Bresnahan Posted February 29, 2024 Report Posted February 29, 2024 Sonny Stitt - Sonny Stitt Swings The Most (Verve). I found this in a pile of Japanese CDs at a local shop. I hadn't even known it came out on CD in 2012 until i found this one. Nice date. Quote

Kevin Bresnahan Posted February 29, 2024 Report Posted February 29, 2024 Now playing - another Stitt CD from that pile of Japanese rarities, "Rearin' Back" (Argo). Another good Stitt date with some early Ronnie Matthews at the piano that's only been out on this Japanese CD. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted February 29, 2024 Report Posted February 29, 2024 (edited) In this pile of rare CDs, there was an unusual Hutcherson/Land CD called "Blow Up" on JMY that I had never seen before. Discogs lists it as an "Unofficial release". This is very good stuff. Some of the tracks sound like they were recorded in a studio. Why wasn't this released back then? This is really good stuff. Highly recommended. And I must be losing it because at one point when I was listening to it, I had to check the discogs listing again because I could swear that the tenor player was Joe Henderson.
