Another Blue Note.

I was surprised lately to read on two forums that this one is not that well-liked. I’ve always liked it in the various editions I’ve had, and love the sound of this SHM-SACD release from last year.

One of my favourite tenor players here in Austria is Ray Aichinger, who´s sound is quite similar to Hank Mobley´s. I always enjoy to hear him live and this is his latest album. Most of the tunes are originals by himself and by the Brooklyn born trumpet player Mark Osterer, really catchy tunes, most of them boogaloo.
My favourites here is "Old Man and Seagull", "Oide Donau" (Old Danube), and the wonderful fast samba "Flight of the Tucan".......

It looks like Ray Aichinger's "Guilty Pleasure" is only available for streaming here in the US. I wonder if it hasn't made it into his discogs discography because they list him as Raimund Aichinger and not as Ray Aichinger there?

The below post was merged with the one above. They are not about the same recordng. :)

Now playing on this cold winter morning here in Maine... disc 2 (of 3) of George Garzone/Peter Erskine/Alan Pasqua/Darek Oles - 3 Nights In L.A. (Fuzzy Music). This is not exactly what I expected from this group but it is enjoyable enough. That said, 3 discs might just be a bit more than is needed from this date. I don't know why they felt that this date deserved to heard in its entirety, but I suppose if you really like it, why not?

Stacey Rowles - trumpet, flugelhorn; Jane Fair - saxophones: Jill McCarron, piano: Rosemary Galloway, bass: Sherrie Maricle, drums; rec. 1992 Toronto.

I hadn't listened to this this for years, and it was good to revisit this excellent hard-bop recording.

Coincidentally, Tommy Flanagan for me too:

Per Wikipedia:

Five of [Sea Change's] eleven compositions were recorded by Flanagan in 1957 for his debut album, Overseas, including "Relaxin' at Camarillo" and four Flanagan compositions ("Beat's Up", "Eclypso", "Verdandi" and "Dalarna"). The other titles are thematically related to the earlier album, which was recorded in Stockholm, either by their connection to the idea of the sea ("How Deep Is the Ocean", "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea", "I Cover the Waterfront", "Sea Changes"), referencing Stockholm ("Dear Old Stockholm"), or, in the case of Ma Rainy's "See See Rider", including a homophone of "sea" in the title.

His real name ist Raimund ! On advertising and billing he is listed as "Ray". Because he calls himself Ray, I once suggested we play "Ray´s Idea" and many folks play it in F or ....Chet Baker recorded it in B flat, but Ray suggested D flat which is my favourite key for that tune. Billy Eckstine and Dizzy Gillespie recorded it in Db back in the 40´s.
