Is this good? Interesting line up

Yes, I like it very much.

And I'd say the same about Roditi's Two of Swords, which I posted earlier.

Deep masters of the dirge

Don't question that, Gil Evans is a modern day master and very much respect Helen Merrell. Just didn't dig the record.

What's the packaging look like inside? Original artwork like the outside box indicates?

Warne Marsh Ted Brown live in Hollywood 1957. Both on top form. Ted would be 97 now, haven’t seen any updates for a few years since there was a fund raiser for him. Hope he’s keeping OK.

That's cool. I don't do files or stream.

Some day if I am feeling really confident and adventurous I may try the downloading and burning to cdr. . . but that won't be soon.

Forgot to mention that Bandcamp generally offers WAV file for the same price as anything else. So if you got the hard drive space (and you really should, everybody should these days) , hey...some artists on Bandcamp aren't even offering CDs these days. Mostly young composers in the classical/classical-adjacent world, but a trend's a trend.

I expected the Schnitter recording to be a hard bop date, but it's quite different. Others' mileage may vary, but I didn't find it as musically satisfying as the early Muse LP's he made.

Yes, I know many artists are not offering cds now. I don't do audio on a computer so I'm not going to be buying WAV files . . . probably not. It is tempting to get all of Ms Henderson's catalog at once, but my luck with downloading and burning cdrs etc. has not been good the last few years and I will probably forego the files route. I'll investigate her music via cds as I see fit to spend the money.

Played a lot of Cal Tjader today in preparation of an evening with Cal Tjader for a friend's bi-monthly listening saloon - his hi-fi and listening room are outstanding, vines sound fantastic on his gear.

Masayoshi Urabe - What Hasn’t Come Here, COME!

R-14472711-1575224868-9107.jpg.7c86ac57681227d8680b5a2beb379a64.jpg

Real hack work from a Kaoru Abe imitator, in my opinion. Abe could be one dimensional and silly at times, but Urabe needs to learn more than my one pattern on the saxophone. At least the harmonica is competent.

Why would you even set out to imitate Abe so slavishly? I love Kaoru Abe, but he wasn't a musician who enriched the vocabulary. He's loved for his intensity and the details of his life.

Maybe a duet album with Andre 3000 next?

Snarky Puppy - Immigrance

Immigrance_album_cover.jpg.faf782acf91c6742bbdbeafa5b5f10c7.jpg

My cousin loves these guys so I periodically check them out. Hard to see what is good about it. It seems to be just sequencer music, with musicians playing their parts to a ticker. So there's no tricks of phrasing or rhythmic interplay or anything much really. The tunes are just pastichey. Why you would listen to this rather than e.g. MPS big band jazz funk records or something bewilders me.
