It's a solid record. I like Watts' soulful sound. Quote

HutchFan Posted May 15 Report Posted May 15 Next up: Arthur Blythe Trio - Spirits in the Field (Savant, 2000) with Bob Stewart (tu) and Cecil Brooks III (d); recorded live at the Bimhuis, Amsterdam in 1999 Quote
adh1907 Posted May 15 Report Posted May 15 (edited) Irene Kral, the Band and I, with Herb Pomeroy. Such a clear strong voice, coasting over a big band. The Ernie Wilkins arrangements are punchy. Edited May 15 by adh1907 Quote

I consider myself very lucky to have seen him with Quartet West several times. Such a great player. I once owned this but I can't seem to find it right now. I'm pretty sure I had the XRCD version. 21 hours ago, HutchFan said: Thanks, @Kevin Bresnahan! I'm glad you're enjoying it. I think it was released to kick off the "rebirth" of the Prestige label but I don't think too many titles were released on it afterward. Quote

A sensational record, sketching in some of the space between Black string band traditions and both New Orleans brass and Memphis jug styles. Quote
Rabshakeh Posted May 16 Report Posted May 16 Curtis Fuller – Two Bones One of the best Tucker / Harewood performances, I think. Quote

Yes, they are quite good. Now. . . . A big storm passed through two hours or so ago. About half the blooms on our dogwood have been dashed to the ground. No damage that I have discovered yet however. Going to be a mild day, I think. Starting off with a newly arrived cd from Lauren Henderson, “Musa.” Great choice of tunes, and nice, nice, nice. What a sensuous voice. Edited May 16 by jazzbo Quote

Just checked that series on Discogs (it wasn't too familiar to me). I guess I'll have to be on the lookout for these at our local #1 vinyl outlet. From time to time for no good reason at all (except that the covers sometimes aren't pristine) these Folkways items crop up in their clearance sale bins. Some time ago I picked up a copy of the "Music of the Eureka Brass Band" (Folkways FA 2462) there, as well as a reissue of the Young Tuxedo Brass Band LP on Atlantic - for just 1 EUR each. It's not music I'd care to listen to each week, but once you do spin these records it's a very special listening experience! Quote

I love the Folkways label, both their more authentically traditionalist and more modern output. Magical stuff. Quote
