All this because I figured this is music that I was highly unlikely to ever see the original releases of at affordable prices (and only part of the contents of this set were ever released on vinyl back in the day anyway). So I figured I'd better grab this set while it was available. 

Yes that was a fine decision of yours and my thoughts were in the same direction.

German jazz wasnt too interesting for the collectors when the great US  releases were available.

Some  of thosem in the box made it really on the market as "Hans Last" ---> later James Last and to a certain degree Hutta Hipp & Hans Koller.

Another jazz piano player that is new to me. This guy can play very very well. An album I highly recommend for those who like straight ahead swinging jazz. George Mraz adds some fine bass work as well.

Tom Lellis “Southern Exposure” Adventure Music cd

Another Brazilian themed album from pianist/singer Lellis–a great chill pill for right now. A good band playing very groovily.

Something like a dozen years ago, I bought and watched this film on Butch Morris called "Black February" and between his self-important attitude coupled with his boorish interactions with his musicians (some other things too), I was so turned off by him, that I just completely stopped listening to him.

Thanks. I'll look for video of that.  I started listening to those conductions only a few years ago, and the background info on Morris I dug up (at the time) was positive. OTOH, I've heard many unsavory anecdotes about d**kish conductors and composers in the classical realm, so nothing would surprise me.

I've only picked up 5 of the CDs, ones that were for sale cheap at Berkshire. I like them. The notion of "conduction" certainly leaves open the possibility of fraudulence, but I don't get that here. There's a true sense of underlying form in the service of the spontaneity (or is it the other way around?).

I think I've seen the same piece as Rod, and yeah, comes of as a bit pompous. But oh well. I'm playing his records, not renting him a spare bedroom.

True, that. Before purchasing any Morris, I heard the "Treasure Box" (though not in that format) recordings of Alan Silva's HR 57 material and thought the results merited more listening.

I currently attend monthly concerts of the Creative Improvisers Orchestra (founded by the late Karl Berger), and they AFAICT in effect involve conduction (almost always by Peter Apfelbaum). Everyone appears to get along, and I like the results.
