Justin V Posted December 4, 2019 Report Posted December 4, 2019 Disc 1: My first listen after finding it for $2, although I have a Hep disc covering some 1938 material. I expected the sound to be worse. However, I have been spending a lot of the last few weeks listening to '20s, '30s and '40s jazz, so my ears may just be tuned in to older recordings. Quote

A great live recording of the "second quintet". 11 hours ago, soulpope said: Also .... : Maybe the only Occasion on which Bud played "Satin Doll". Evidently because it´s reported that Ellington produced this album. The choose of the drummer "Kansas" Fields is a bit strange, normally Kenny Clarke was Bud´s drummer in Paris . Quote

HutchFan Posted December 4, 2019 Report Posted December 4, 2019 Last night: A grab bag of Duke, mostly from 1937. Years ago, this CD was one (of a couple) that prompted my breakthrough in "getting" Ellington. Therefore, it's now one of my most treasured. And, even though I own all of this music on the big Mosaic set, I will never get rid of this particular disc. This morning: Really grooving to this lately. A sort-of sequel to Baron's Down Home. Justin V Posted December 4, 2019 Report Posted December 4, 2019 I'd recommend this compilation to anyone interested in checking out Berigan. Quote
duaneiac Posted December 4, 2019 Report Posted December 4, 2019 A Bang & Olufsen promotional item -- a little 38 page hardcover booklet which features mainly ad copy about their products (none of which I will ever be able to afford) and includes a 12 track CD of Duke Ellington material recorded by Mulgrew Miller and NHOP in Copenhagen in 1999.
