I saw John Lee Hooker perform only once, about two or three years before his passing. It was an outdoor concert here in San Jose. For most of the show, he left much of the heavy lifting to his band of the time, the Coast to Coast Blues Band. It was kind of an underwhelming show until . . . Near the end of the show, on one number (it might have been "Boom Boom"), as the song progressed, Mr. Hooker's vocal built and gained strength and momentum until there was a brief 30-45 second segment which was absolutely and literally spell-binding.
