Lots of chopped up samples of everything from vibes (Mwamba’s a reasonably-known vibes player on the British scene, not sure of what his worldwide presence is) to dulcimer and a Swiss exercise ball, recorded a home on a laptop. Very much of the “MySpace generation”. I’m not sure that it’s jazz, really, but it’s aged surprisingly well for what it is. It’s available to sample on his Bandcamp page, if you fancy a taste. It lists the wines he was drinking whilst making it. From the list, I’m afraid to say that the Rioja in question probably wasn’t Spain’s finest export. Edited October 28, 2021 by Rabshakeh Quote

Eldridge & Dolphy together would probably work nowhere else but on a record date, but...here one is, and listening to the contrast - and when Dolphy wants to go "vocal" the similarities - is one more reason why Records Are Your Best Entertainment Value Were they not together live at Newport before the recording was made? They might have been, at the Rebel Festival. But Ornette played with KD there as well, and that would not have worked more than once! I guess what i meant was as an ongoing engagement, like for a club date of any duration. Quote

HutchFan Posted October 28, 2021 Report Posted October 28, 2021 (edited) Lew Soloff - Hanalei Bay (Electric Bird/ProJazz, 1985) The rhythm section on this disc -- Gil Evans (el p), Pete Levin (synth), Mark Egan (el b), and Adam Nussbaum (d) -- is drawn from Evans' Monday Night Orchestra, as heard on the recording above. Soloff played in that band too, of course. 37 minutes ago, soulpope said: Quite fascinating music, marred a bit by Hiram "The Butcher" Bullock's presence/playing .... Hmm... I've never had much of a reaction to Bullock, one way or the other. (My biggest association: Him playing with the "Late Night with David Letterman" band.) What is it about Bullock's playing bothers you? Incidentally, he also appears on Hanalei Bay. Edited October 28, 2021 by HutchFan Quote
Rabshakeh Posted October 28, 2021 Report Posted October 28, 2021 Kenny Graham's Afro-Cubists Volume One - Mango Walk (Esquire, 1951-3) Nice one, which I don't own but listened to on the YouTubes after reading a reference to it in a blog. From the looks of it, it was a London bebop band, with West African percussionists, playing Afro-Cuban bebop. What I heard is very witty and really enjoyable. Quote

Too loud, too intense, simply way too much rock-oriented presence .... in general I'm not an aficionado of electric guitars, but here in places he dictates the sound of the band .... f.i. Ryo Kawasaki or John Beck had a much better intergrated role in this band .... Quote
