SMOKE SCREENS PRESENTS: THE MARC CARY TRIO FEATURING NASHEET WAITS & RASHAAN CARTER

Marc-Cary-1

FRIDAY MAY 14 - SATURDAY MAY 15 / LIVE STREAMED / 8PM EST

“Cary shows how creatively he can stretch cool piano-jazz swingers over complex and cutting-edge rhythms, producing music that sounds old and new at once.” – The Guardian

Marc Cary leads a mesmerizing trio featuring  Nasheet Waits and Rashaan Carter in two nights of livestreaming concerts.  One of New York’s best jazz pianists, Cary has been a singular presence in New York for three decades including celebrated work with Betty Carter and Abbey Lincoln. Today, he is at the forefront of the musically diverse, genre blending contemporary jazz scene. As The New York Times observed, “There isn’t much in the modern-jazz-musician tool kit that Marc Cary hasn’t mastered, but he has a particular subspecialty in the area of groove…with a range of rhythmic strategies, from a deep-house pulse to a swinging churn.”

This show is from December, but it was REALLY good. I think I saw 2 of those shows that weekend. I might have to watch it again.

I missed that one. Currently listening to (and really liking) the new Dave Holland release (Another Land).

Weird. It worked for me the other day. They must have taken it down or changed it.

I just heard back from the venue. It has been postponed due to a medical issue with one of the performers. I hope it is not too serious...

Apparently Charles T. has just undergone an emergency dental procedure. Hope he gets well soon. Rescheduled for Sept I think.

SMOKE SCREENS PRESENTS: ENCORE RESTREAM - THE JOHNATHAN BLAKE TRIO / QUARTET FEATURING CHRIS POTTER, DEZRON DOUGLAS, & SULLIVAN FORTNER

unnamed-2

FRIDAY JULY 2 - SATURDAY JULY 3 / ENCORE RESTREAMED / 8PM EST

Chris Potter (tenor saxophone)

Dezron Douglas (bass)
Johnathan Blake (drums)

“Despite his roots in Philadelphia, JohnathanBlake is the quintessential New York City jazz drummer.” – Lee Mergner, JazzTimes

Johnathan Blake, a drummer whose dynamic playing, artistic vision, and innate versatility led NPR’s John Murph to call him “the ultimate modernist,” leads a very special group featuring saxophonist Chris Potter, pianist Sullivan Fortner (Saturday only), and bassist Dezron Douglas. The New York Times says, “Blake’s drumming is as bold as thunder and as subtle as the patter of rain.” The Guardian adds, “his command of time is quite unbelievable – tricky and playful but accurate to the millisecond.”

Smoke made a smart decision. Any club that chooses to discontinue the livestreams after reopening is shooting itself in the foot. Smoke's streams are high quality.

I am asking a serious question here...

Does anyone know how the publishing rights work with these live streams? I ask because I knew a guy who got into trouble because he had the audacity to play music over his bar's speaker system without making arrangements with the publishing arm of the music industry. They literally came knocking on his door with their hand out.
