paul secor Posted December 3, 2010 Report Posted December 3, 2010 Roscoe Mitchell and The Note Factory: Far Side (ECM) Duke Ellington: Unknown Session (Columbia) Louis Smith: Silvering (Steeplechase) - Recorded with Von Freeman & Von Freeman's group. Chuck steered me to this inadvertantly (at least I believe it was inadvertant). Never knew it existed til then & I'm looking forward to hearing it. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted December 3, 2010 Report Posted December 3, 2010 Louis was "bewildered" by Von. Quote
paul secor Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 Louis was "bewildered" by Von. Listened to it today. Sounds as if Von Freeman was truly up for this date, and Louis Smith plays well also. Their ways of playing are different, to be sure, but I can't say that I heard any signs of conflict. Louis Smith seems to go his own way and there isn't as much interaction as I might have expected. Perhaps that's the "bewidered " part of it. I enjoyed the music. I see that Louis Smith also recorded a duo album with Jodie Christian for Steeplechase. I'm assuming that this was recorded around the same time as Silvering. The music on the clips sounds rather morose, but one can't always judge correctly from listening to snippets. Quote

Looking forward to this one. I was watching that auction, and almost bid myself, but my economic reality set in. I'm glad it went to a good home - congrats. Quote
sidewinder Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 (edited) The Keynote set is very good - congrats ! Just won an original vinyl copy of Chitinous Ensemble 'Chitinous' (Deram) tonight on the 'bay'. This one has eluded me on vinyl for years, although I have the CD. Tom Storer Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 I haven't been buying anything recently so I made up for it in an end-of-year splurge on five CDs, all of which have generated a lot of enthusiasm among critics and fans: Cassandra Wilson, Silver Pony: I like her more and more. Tarbaby, The End of Fear: Orrin Evans/Eric Revis/Nasheet Waits with strong guest stars (Oliver Lake, Nicholas Payton and J.D. Allen). Sam Newsome, Blue Soliloquy: solo soprano sax. Randy Weston and his African Rhythms Sextet, Storyteller: Sounds very promising, with Lewis Nash on drums. Kenny Werner, New York Love Songs: solo piano. Ought to be a good mix. Supposedly they'll cross the Atlantic before Christmas, but I won't hold my breath. Quote

AndrewHill Posted December 8, 2010 Report Posted December 8, 2010 Nice little used cd haul at my fav cd exchange: Cannonball Adderley Quintet-Live in Japan-Capitol Jazz But the $1 bin turned out to be the real treasure trove: Mel Rhyne-Remembering Wes-Savant Teddy Charles-Dances with Bulls-Smalls Records But the real find was Harold Land-Xocia's Dance on Muse...for a dollar!!! The disc is a little rough and the booklet is kinda crinkled, but it sure beats the $37.50 they're asking for on Amazon! Quote

TheMusicalMarine Posted December 14, 2010 Report Posted December 14, 2010 Today at Amoeba picked up Dizzy Gillespie Vol.5 (Masters of Jazz) Dizzy Gillespie Vol.1 (Masters of Jazz) Joe Lutcher 1947 (R&B Classics) Gerry Mulligan - California Concerts, Vol.1 Unfortunately, my database isn't up to date and II already have the Joe Lutcher, so that's a few buck wasted. The other three, however, are good finds at good prices. Quote
