Ron S Posted February 29, 2008 Report Posted February 29, 2008 (edited) I hit BMG Music Service to find that their Box Sets are reduced by 2/3 with S&H @ 0$ once you've ordered 5 discs-not sets-discs. I figure they've either lost their minds or want to unload their Box Sets. Thus-the Complete Coltrane Quartets @ $12.33, Complete Charlie Parker Master Takes on Verve $9.33, BHoliday Verve Studio Master Takes $9.33, Coltrane Complete Village Vanguard Sessions, Jimmy Smith-Retrospective-$8 etc, etc. If you belong to BMG I'd hurry over there. Peace, Blue Trane Code please? No code, Agg-amemnon. If you have a code in the promotion code window on the left, remove it. Blue Trane's right--CRAZY low prices (e.g., 8 bucks for the Complete Norman Granz Jam Sessions), with no shipping once you get up to five discs in your cart (which you do with just one set like the Granz). Just go to the Jazz tab on the top of the home page, and then to "Boxed Sets" under "Explore" on the right, and start browsing (and buying ). Of course, same crazy low prices for box sets in classical, rock, etc. Edited February 29, 2008 by Ron S Quote
Aggie87 Posted February 29, 2008 Report Posted February 29, 2008 Unfortunately, that's not my standard offer right now. I'm getting the Buy 1 get 90% off offer right now.... Maybe it's because of how many free items I got earlier. No wait, then Ron would be excluded more than me! Quote
mikelz777 Posted February 29, 2008 Report Posted February 29, 2008 (edited) Rolf Billberg - Rare Danish Recordings By A Swedish Jazz Legend This was a very nice find at a Half Price Books store for only $5.98 and still sealed. Billberg, who plays both tenor and alto sax here, is not the leader of any of the groups featured in this CD but he's one of the primary soloists in all the numbers. It clocks in at a very nice 74:41 and I'm enjoying it very much. I'd recommend it . Three of the numbers here even include a 14 year old(!) Niels-Henning Orstad Petersen. Lew Blackburn - The Complete Imperial Sessions I had never heard of Blackburn until I read some buzz about this CD and how enjoyable it was. I checked out the sound samples, liked what I heard and picked up a copy which is somewhere in the USPS at this moment. Cecilia Coleman - The Imposter I first learned of pianist Cecilia Coleman while listening to Live365 on the internet. She's not well known but you can find several of her releases at CD Baby. I find her to be very talented and she's put a hook in me. Steve Huffsteter on trumpet/flugelhorn and Jerry Pinter on tenor sax make for the other primary soloists on this CD and all are excellent IMHO. Edited February 29, 2008 by mikelz777 Quote

BillF Posted March 4, 2008 Report Posted March 4, 2008 (edited) Count Basie, Kansas City Suite (Vogue/Roulette) First heard this last week on an archived radio show by the late Oscar Treadwell at www.oscartreadwell.com. Amazon.uk was offering used copies from £55, but I got it for 10 euros via the French priceminister site, which Niko recommended! Thanks, Niko! Edited March 4, 2008 by BillF Quote

Amazon.uk was offering used copies from £55, but I got it for 10 euros via the French priceminister site, which Nico recommended! Thanks, Nico! Yes, that one is pretty nice. It's on the Basie Roulette Studio Mosaic set. I've also seen Japanese vinyls of it - and the UK issue can also be picked up without too much bother for £5 or so. Quote
Shawn Posted March 4, 2008 Report Posted March 4, 2008 Found a used copy of this box yesterday at a good price...MAN...what a GREAT set of music! Quote

papsrus Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 After listening to a newly arrived quartet disc by Hall, pulled the trigger on this one, which features Hall in both quartet and sextet settings with the likes of Milt Hinton and Vic Dickerson: I know nothing about this reissue label -- Mighty Quinn -- but they are said to have high production values. poetrylover3 Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 I ordered the Baby Face Willette-thanks for the tip on BMG. I'm looking forward to hearing Paul Bley for the first time on Solo in Mondsee and renewing acquaintance with Wes Montgomery's more pop material in the Millennium Collection. Joe Williams' small group Everyday I Have The Blues featuring Thad Jones and Snooky Young looks to be a real treat. I also went crazy this last weekend over that BMG Box Set sale, ordering Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Coltrane's Quartet and Village Vanguard Sessions, the two Sinatra boxes, Ray Charles' Atlantic Soul Sessions. In Rock I ordered the Complete Led Zeplin and Citizen Steely Dan sets. For Classical I pulled the trigger on Bruckner, Martha Argerich & Friends, Mozart Symphonies, Jacqueline DuPre, Mitsuko Uchida's Schubert. Now where I'll get the time to listen to it all... Peace, Blue Trane Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 While my PC was down, the postman brought me A wonderful album! Similar personnel to the band in the eighties, with a few changes. Mmah Sylla is still singing with them. But there are a few guests, including the great Aminata Kamissoko, one of my favourites. I suspect this may be the first time she's been heard on CD. The music is somewhat updated, but not too much, and the band is still playing great music! I also got Been meaning to get this for a while, following recommendations in the SA Jazz thread. Very nice stuff. And I see that one of the guys in the band, Ntemi Piliso, is someone I picked out blind a few weeks ago and ordered two of his 1975 albums from South Africa, which are still in the post. Now VERY MUCH looking forward to getting them. And I also got That Devilin' tune, vols 1, 2 and 4 - vol 3 still in the post. MG Quote
