Matthew Posted May 6, 2006 Report Posted May 6, 2006 Mine arrived today, 4918, and been playing disk one. Must say it sounds wonderful to my ears, and I'm glad I finally listened to eveyone and pulled the trigger on this set. Quote

For the record, I a/b my Mosaic against the Japanese mastering of "Blue Trombone" along with the Columbia remastering of "JJ Inc," and I felt the Japanese mastering was superior to my ears to the Mosaic. The "JJ inc." was similar to the Mosaic. Quote

(By the way, was that a/b done before or after you'd had 6 light beers? ) Settle down, Ron! I like to point this stuff out for those unquestioned and wholly-devoted slaves to all things Mosaic! The set is worth having, for sure, but it ain't perfect. Mosaic is a good outfit, but--damn!--nothing critical can ever be said about Mosaics on this board! -_- Quote
Ron S Posted May 7, 2006 Report Posted May 7, 2006 The set is worth having, for sure, but it ain't perfect. Now you've gone and burst my bubble. It was so much easier to believe that everything Mosaic is perfect. Quote

Working my way through disk one again, just a very nice feel to this music, you can sense JJ's love and respect for music flowing out from the set. Angel Eyes is great -- too bad about the crappy sound though..... Quote
Bill Nelson Posted May 10, 2006 Report Posted May 10, 2006 The JJ's seem to be moving at a clip of about one copy per day -- not quite 'hotcakes'. I hear the voices of my old buddys, my minty 6-eye stereo LPs fearful of being abandoned. They're saying,"Put the gun down, Bill. Don't pull that trigger!" Vacillate. Salivate. Vacillate. Maybe in another week, it'll be too late and the shouting will be over. The looming image of 'The Procrastinator' will be a relief. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted May 11, 2006 Report Posted May 11, 2006 The JJ's seem to be moving at a clip of about one copy per day -- not quite 'hotcakes'. This box set has been available forever. It doesn't quite rank as popular as hotcakes. It'll be interesting to see if there will be any price bump on the secondary market once it sells out. It might take some time... Quote

It'll be interesting to see if there will be any price bump on the secondary market once it sells out. It might take some time... Of that, I have no doubt. Heck, there are plenty of people who are out there plunking down $20, 30+ more for a "scarce" NM Mobley or Jazztet set that's still available. Once you tack on 'Rare'/'OOP' to the listing, you'll pull in the same sort of melonhead like me who'll spend $100+ for some 'Rare'/'OOP' mini-lp!!! Quote
ASNL77 Posted May 12, 2006 Report Posted May 12, 2006 (edited) It took a long time but this set is now officially OOP. Bye Bye J.J! What a great set this is. Edited May 12, 2006 by ASNL77 Quote

DMP Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 It's very good. Great tunes, first-rate charts (by Oliver Nelson and Gary McFarland) - it's a nice contrast to the many hard bop style dates in his discography. If you like Johnson, I can't imagine not having this one. Quote

If you like Johnson, I can't imagine not having this one. It's a good record, but I still think J.J.'s RCA records would have made a good Select. "The Total J. J. Johnson" is every bit as good as "J.J." IMHO, and it would be fun to have the more commercial stuff as well. Quote
Chas Posted January 30, 2007 Report Posted January 30, 2007 I asked this before and didn't get a reply , so I'll try again . On J.J. ! , are the two previously unissued Tom McIntosh charts of the same quality as the Johnson and McFarland ones ? I ask , because I already have the Spanish RCA CD which sounds good , and so my decision on whether or not to upgrade to the Mosaic depends on the answer . Also , do those who have heard Stonebone think it would be a worthy candidate for Mosaic Singles treatment ? Quote
sonnyhill Posted August 27, 2018 Report Posted August 27, 2018 I slept on the J.J. Johnson Mosaic. I downloaded it from a friendly source and just got around to listening to it. It is one of the best box sets from start to finish that I have listened to. Question to those familiar with the set: On my digital version there are noticeably glitches at the 2:00 mark on "Walking" on Disc 4 and at the 1:20 mark on "Laura" on Disc 4. Is that the case on all copies? I just want to know whether it just was an issue with the download. I will probably be looking to score 2d hand copy. Quote
