Tour de France, absolutely enthralling this year. Yesterday and todays stages full of drama.

I bought that in the ‘80s, still sounding good, probably better than any originals. It’s a great compilation, well mastered.

Sounds good. Fred ‘Thelonious’ Baker? Sounds wonderful, hope the weather held out. Alan Barnes is always good value.

Beautiful album (and sleeve). I have this in a few editions but pleased to have an original 10” copy which has a powerful sound to it.

Great book, got me excited about jazz when I was 18, along with my Dad’s jazz book club edition of Ross Russell’s Parker the legend. Unreliable (the nutmeg recipe didn’t work) but an exciting read as a youngster. Sorry, meant Robert Reisner’s Bird book.

I have that. If I recall, that issue doesn’t replicate any US Pacific Jazz compilations and includes some rare tracks. Possibly the Teddy Edwards off the top of my head. Wow. Was that the Gerrard St place? Am I right in thinking it was unlicensed? With a milk dispensing machine?

Giuffre is massively underrated isn’t he? Those charts and then free fall? He is a genius, I love him. Bright moon, for example.

The late Steve Schwartz, a great Boston jazz DJ, did a very good long interview with Giuffre not long before Giuffre died It covered his whole career. From recollection, his wife was also involved. Steve very kindly sent me a cassette copy of the programme. I have it somewhere. I am sure the unedited tapes if they exist would be very useful if anyone were to write a biography. I would love to read one. Anthony London

After being blown away by Point of Departure, 20 or so years ago, I bought any Gary McFarland album I came across in the wild. Consequently, with a few (a very few) exceptions I have a stack of cheesy easy listening records.

You may be right. in the May edition of Jazzwise there is an article by Chris Welch about the Bulls Head in which he states that Mercury recorded Storm Warning live there on 22 and 29 November 1965. Still not convinced it is live as there is no audience noise that I can hear. Anthony

That’s funny, as I am sure the ‘digitally remastered’ LP reissue of the 2000s is taken from the Disconforme CD! The LP is mono and sounds v harsh. I am happy to pass my copy onto anyone Uk based, gratis. I have a stereo original and it sounds much better in comparison. Interesting that our Mr Sidewinder is the source of the BGO reissue, thanks! Yes, I went to that. I can’t believe that was 2005. I think they did a couple of tunes, including ‘Starless and bible black’. Wellins’ solo on that is so memorable I stupidly expected him to repeat it, which of course, he didn’t.
