New release date -- August, 2006. We'll see. Where did you get this information ? Last week I called the publisher to inquire about the book's availability and found that the phone number was ' not in service ' . I then called the publisher's distributor and was given a different phone number , but that number was also ' not in service ' . I guess I should try and contact Jack Chambers directly , but the only email address I have for him is at the University of Toronto from which he recently retired I believe . Anyway , while we wait for the book to come out , I thought some of you might be interested in this piece which appeared on page 25 of the January 1956 issue of Metronome . Edit to add : If anyone would like a larger-text image of this page please let me know . Additional edit : Fixed dead image link .

That was the New York Daily Mirror . Tan Confessions , Bronze Thrills , Copper Romance ....yes we're all familiar with those ...especially 50 year-old copies Seriously , it sounds as though you've thoroughly researched this . I asked several somewhat esoteric Birdland questions in a recent thread that I hope will be answered in this forthcoming book .

Surprised to find that one of my favorite versions of this great song went unmentioned in this thread : a duet between Charles McPherson and Pat Martino found on this album : At eight minutes it is the longest , and I think , best track on the album . Beautifully lyrical playing from both men ; really lovely .

Not 80 , but rather , 74 ; Bob was born in Los Angeles in 1932 . I only have his Carlton side and would like to hear the Liberty session from the mid-Sixties . Lazaro's show does not stream live on the web , is that correct ?

Have A/B-ed the album: the same takes were used for both the mono and stereo versions. However, two tunes were edited only in the stereo version: one is missing a short solo piano intro, and another is missing a whole 32-bar chorus. Also, AFAIK, the mono version has never been reissued. F PS A copy of the mono LP went for $400+ on eBay recently (wasn't me). So , two very good reasons to hang on to my tape of the mono LP Thanks for clearing up the mono/stereo takes question Fernando . I suppose a bad mike could have necessitated the stereo edits . I know your forthcoming Costa discography will answer this , but the Japanese vinyl reissue(s) were all in stereo then ? And , the Lonehill CD , like the most recent Japanese CD , is in stereo ? I hope somebody who has the Lonehill will give us a report on the overall sound quality of the CD ; I hope Lonehill did a good job , as this is the way most people will be exposed to this most interesting piano jazz .

I am curious about the mute that Curtis Fuller is using in this photograph . Looks like something Curtis made himself by cutting holes in a chamois . I suppose you could modify a Softone neoprene mute to look like this , but to what end ? I mean , what timbral effect or tone quality does that particular pattern of holes provide ? Would this type of mute have less impact on pitch accuracy when compared with other mute types ? I would think that staying in tune while muted ( through lip control or slide position adjustment ) would be important in ensemble or section work , unless everyone is using the same mute . Would the kind of mute Curtis is using in this photograph be one that could be used when the score direction is " In Velvet " or " Cloth " ? EDIT : To fix dead image link .

You can hear samples and buy the Solo Guitar CD at : Art of Life Records The label has plans to issue all five of the Spitball albums ( a 1970's Florida label ) that feature Joe , which are: Spitball SB-1 Rapport ( with Wally Cirillo ) Spitball SB-2 Solo Guitar Spitball SB-3 SoloDuo ( with Wally Cirillo ) Spitball SB-5 Straight Ahead to the Light ( with Steve Bagby ) Spitball SB-7 Peaceful Journey The remaining Spitball albums ( without Joe ) are : Spitball SB-4 Mindscapes ( Charles Austin and Joe Gallivan ) Spitball SB-6 Expression to the Winds ( Charles Austin and Joe Gallivan ) I am particularly looking forward to hearing the two dates Joe did with pianist Wally Cirillo . Cirillo showed great promise in the Fifties , most especially with Charles Mingus , but was off the scene in the Sixties and these Spitball dates with Diorio would be his last work , as Wally died a few years later in 1977 at the age of 50 . Joe Diorio , who will be 70 this August , is still listed as a lecturer at the Thornton School of Music at USC , but I don't know of his present health . Other notable offerings worth exploring from Art of Life Records include some rare trio sides by British pianist Gordon Beck , as well as some previously unreleased Tubby Hayes in a quartet with Beck .

New Jazz additions for sale $8.00 each (free shipping)
Chas replied to jazzmusicdepot's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Okay , usual disclaimers apply , I don't know this seller or have any pecuniary interest here , however , I just want to say that I hope someone jumps on the Don Sleet CD . I used to write Ralph Kaffel ( President of Fantasy ) with my requests for some of the more obscure titles in the catalog , efforts , which for the most part , were not fruitful . The Sleet was among those requests . The Sleet reissue came about after I put Don's brother David in touch with Ralph . David then enlisted Mike Wofford ( who had played with Don for years ) , to join the lobbying effort , and Fantasy came through . Anyway , this is a fine album , with Sleet never overawed by his supporting cast . Wynton Kelly is his usual swinging and supportive self . Good sound courtesy of Ray Fowler as well . -
Yeah, the performance on that Enja disc is killer...same group except Hal Galper replaces Stanley Cowell. And yes, there are a number of phenomenal performances of the group from Europe in 1969 and 1970. Most have Cowell, a couple have Galper on piano. The Enja Lp : And the Enja CD : The Land-Hutcherson track on the Enja disc is an 18 minute version of , " The Creators " from the June 1970 Ljubljana Festival , where the Land Quintet also performed an original of his entitled," Mana Mercury " which appeared on this Yugoslavian LP : I don't know whether this track ever made it to CD . I have wondered if there is more material from that concert . Anybody know ? Edit to replace broken image links

Does anyone have a discography for the Roost subsidiary Legende ? I know of only one title : Johnny Richards ---Annotations of the Muses Legende LP-1401 ( 10") 1955 . In June 1955 Birdland owner Morris Levy bought a 50% interest in Roost Records . The terms of the deal called for the name of the label to be changed to " Birdland Records " . In August of 1955 an ad in Metronome announced , " Birdland Records , formerly known as Roost , presents Johnny Smith Plays Jimmy Van Heusen on Birdland LP 2201 " ( the same catalog number as the Roost issue ) . The address given was the same Tenth Avenue one used by Roost . Now , Morris Levy was involved with Roulette Records from its inception in 1957 , and he did buy the Roost catalog in 1958 , and was responsible for the ' Birdland Series ' on Roulette , but to my knowledge there were no Birdland records released between 1955 and 1957 ; to borrow Roost's slogan of the time , Birdland records were , " music of the future "...literally . Given what is known about Morris " Godfather " Levy , one wonders whether Birdland Records was simply a vehicle for tax-fraud or money-laundering . After all , Levy , who at one time ran Topsy's Chicken Roost , The Cock Lounge and Birdland , only avoided becoming a jailbird by leaving the country ( flying the coop ) and dying ! Does anyone have more information about Birdland Records ? Finally , and tangentially , does anyone know the history of the Birdland nightclub that Levy and his " partners " , opened in Miami Beach in 1954 ?

Thanks for posting Flat5 . Apparently the orchestra was a vehicle for Gambrell to showcase both his composing and arranging skills , as well as his work on several of the instruments he played . Do you remember any of the regulars , or players who passed through the band ? I am familiar only with Gambrell's early piano work . Interesting player both rhythmically and harmonically . Good dynamic sense and very good time ; the kind of player who I imagine had little difficulty negotiating a solo recital . To get a sense of all this listen to the bravura performance of Yesterdays from his second World Pacific side . If we think of Tatum as sui generis then the Gambrells , Petersons and Newborns of the world are each in their own way , epigones , and yet this in no way diminishes our esteem or enjoyment , because what really matters is that the musician swings . Gambrell swung .

One album where A Child is Born fits the vibe of the record perfectly is Quintessence by Bill Evans : Great music for a Sunday morning in bed . While Philly Joe was certainly great at booting a band when necessary , he really shows his range here , with sensitive brushwork throughout . Oh , and you get Harold Land , Kenny Burrell and Ray Brown too .
