    Phil Grenadier

I asked them about the shipping as I thought it was high too and they said it's because they FedEx them, it's the only way they trust there so it's costly but you get them fast. Cadence is fine as well but you can get the new stuff from Fresh Sound much sooner than Cadence gets them. There's a lot of great stuff on that label that's right up your alley Rooster Ties.
  2. Connick is not dropped by Sony, he was allowed to do an instrumental record for Marsalis Music (distributed by Rounder). He has records for both labels on the way. For an artist driven label, Marsalis Music sure acts like the majors. As for Van Morrison, sure why not, they also might stop pretending they're a jazz label. I'm sure a lot of the "hipper" rock or folk people who always admired jazz would be happy to have a record on Blue Note.
  3. Throne of Blood is the shit but my favorite is Yojimbo, kick ass samurai movie and funny too and to a lesser extent the sequel Sanjuro. These were the basis for the Clint Eastwood/Sergio Leone (not the Good, the Bad and the Ugly but the other two) Spaghetti Westerns
  4. Yes he's certainly one of the most promising musicians to come along in a while but he a long way from being in the same league as Woody Shaw. come on. Tommy Crane might look like he's sixteen but he's in college and I believe he's 20. Has anyone checked out his first CD "Profile"? I kind of like it better than "Insight". I'm sure he'll record the Creation band for his next record for MaxJazz. If he's under contract with them, he can't record it elsewhere. I heard the Creation band and it sounds like those Kenny Cox Blue Note records to me.
  5. Freddie Hubbard is certainly a giant and is still active (whether you want to see him or not is another story). Idrees Suliman did pass away fairly recently
  6. Tequila? Did they drink it or play the tune? Sorry I don't know the details but it does exsist.
  7. Rip, Rig and Panic, Inflated Tear, and Domino
  8. Flipped through this in the book store the other day and found it lacking. The research is far from exhaustive and it seems like he didn't even listen to all the records by some of the most important artists.
  9. Actually this is one of my favorite Chet records along with Baby Breeze. Similar band on both and one of his strongest, I could do without the vocals on these though.
  10. You know there is an unissued Larry Young date in the Columbia vaults, heard it's like his Arista stuff.
  11. Typo, new one released recently on Fantasy
  12. Last weeks I assume. I saw it somewhere. Letter from Verve, letter from Shirley etc. all insisting she's still signed
  13. Shirley Horn not dropped, big to do about it in the NY Times, many letters to the editor. Abbey Lincoln not dropped, record in the can I believe. Abbey is actually signed to the French wing of Universal who would probably never drop her.
  14. Go with the music. If it was the Indians of a few years ago, Belle, Ramirez, Lofton, Vizquel, Williams then maybe or if Johnson or Shilling were pitching then maybe but catch the music and watch the other games from the series on the tube.
  15. Told you guys about this months and months ago. First record will be a duet record with Norah Jones, they'll do "What A Wonderful World" and that I say tomato you say tomatoe song (I forgot what it's called). Yes, Wynton will sing, he has quite a nice voice actually. OK, I don't think it's a smart signing but let's get real. This won't have much of any effect on the overall business of Blue Note. Whoever said they thought this was a one-off with many options is probably right as most contacts for jazz recordings are like that. Blue Note probably will let him go before long he loses them the kind of money he lost for Sony. Remember he made 20 plus records for them, Blue Note won't let it come to that. That said, whoever said this ain't really Blue Note anymore anyway is right. Blue Note is a major label now. Big corporation, big business, make money etc. They keep Osby and Moran around for artistic credibility and out of respect for the Blue Note tradition but these folks are here to make money, a lot of money. That's their business, never lose sight of that.
  16. Though probably not his best film, my favorite has always been Frenzy and I've always had a soft spot for the Lady Vanishes. From this list, Noth by Northwest. Notice that when it's on TV, that when Cary Grant says shitty, it always gets by the sensors. I guess no one looks for curses in a 1959 Hitchcock film.
  17. Night of the Cookers does have some highlights. Morgan on "Walkin'" and Hubbard on "Jodo". Outside of that there's not much and certainly no real trumpet battles but I like the records. The Teddy Charles at the Museum of Modern Art is nice as well, great Booker Little and Booker Ervin. As for the blue Blue Notes, they were licenced to a certain company for a certain purpose but obviously had some left after the promotion was over and these were probably sold to a distributer and the rest is history. Probably not much can be done about this, but they're probably not huge quantities of these so fill in the gaps while you can. And for clarity, Blue Moon/Fresh Sound, one company. Discoforme/Jazz Factory one company distributed in Spain by the same company that distributes Fresh Sound/Blue Moon. Planet Music is now Jazzmessenger. My suggestion is that the people who got burned by Planet Music when they folded ask Jazzmessenger to fill their order. Has anyone tried that?
  18. Pujol has nothing to do with these Blue Notes, about other stuff well....
  19. You're probably right. Hope the kid has it in it to suffer through the first couple of bad years. Pistons kind of went out quitely last night, thought they had a couple of wins in them at least. Are the Nets that good now?
  20. I've met Andrew and he's a bit shy actually but quite nice. I can tell you that on Lift Every Voice the vocals probably were not overdubbed and it was a direct to two track recording like most Blue Note's were at the time. Also, don't overwhelm him with to many questions about the past, most of these guys don't have the greatest memories (though I've heard Andrew's is better than most) and might become a bit flustered.
  21. Dan, I'm sure you can find Black Codes somewhere for $2. It's far and away his best record to me and the only one I can recommend to people. Even Albertson might admit it's good.
  22. Tune in Tomorrow and Live at the Vanguard shouldn't be on this list in my opinion as they are both OK. I guess I'll vote for Blood on the Fields.
  23. Black Codes From the Underground is his best record to me and a fine record at that. There is nothing here to vote for. Can you change these things?
  24. The smartest thing for the Cavaliers to do is to trade the pick. Someone will gladly overpay for it and let the kid go through his growing pains somewhere else and if he a bust or just average, the Cavaliers will look very smart. When was the last time that happened?
  25. Melting Pot wouldn't be on the Blue Spirits vinyl. It was a bonus track on the CD.
