  1. Now why didn't I think of that? And here I was all pleased with myself for working out a weekend trip to New York and Philly. Well you just gotta sacrifice for the music, you know?! greg mo Well, after a year of holding out hoping that DG or some other US source would get the Grappelli in (The Nearness of You, I believe is the title), I finally broke down and ordered it from Amazon.co.uk. It's probably sourced from Amazon.fr, but they combined shipping with some other items I was interested in off the UK site, so the shipping doesn't sting quite as much as from Amazon.fr or FNAC. It should arrive early next week. It's probably crazy (and the music wouldn't sustain such hype on its own), but it is the only one from the JIP series that I don't have. I can relate. It's a pleasant enough record. I had to go to at least three FNACs in Paris before I found it, and then it was more expensive than all the other JiPs they had! Sigh. I am addicted to the series. I know Volkher monitors whenever the topic comes up. Any sign of further issues in the series, Volkher?! gregmo
  2. I've tried to like it...really have, but it just doesn't get there for me. He sings slightly flat, and his winsome tone, which some find affecting, I tend just to find maudlin. There's a later version of his signature tune, "My Funny Valentine," that I can listen to, but for the most part, nah. gregmo
  3. Do you know if there's any overlap with the Proper box? gregmo There are two tracks in common, the 1956 'Jazz At The Flamingo' tracks. Otherwise no overlap, as far as I can see. FWIW, the Tony Kinsey Ember album and TAP28 which was under Crombie's leadership are said by the liner-writer to have been made as mood music and to be deliberately 'underplayed'. Older British listeners may even feel that they subliminally recall this music as it was used for test-card accompaniment on TV, back in the back of beyondness. Those sides are pretty muted and, while I hesitate to suggest it in a completist's heaven such as this, are maybe not a priority, though there are deft contributions by Tubbs (and by Deuchar on the Kinsey) which bring a bit of life to one or two of the tracks from those two LPs. I won't be going back to them often, I suspect. The two Jazz Couriers LPs (TAP 15 and TAP 22) are of course very good, so the set is a curate's egg and the transfers are pretty basic. Thanks!! gregmo

  5. I wouldn't be surprised if putting up countless subsidiaries (presumably with complicated ownership relations) makes it easier to escape responsibility for copyright/IP infringements. Why would they do that? They have nothing to fear as long as they abide by the EU regulations regarding the 50-year copyright limitations! I may be wrong, but I'm under the impression that it's unclear if these labels have cleared the rights for covers, are paying royalties for compositions etc., rights which are not limited to 50 years after the release of the recording. Also, several of these labels have also been releasing stuff recorded after 1960. yeah, I recently got the Lonehill J.J. Johnson big band 2-cd set that reissues the stuff he did for Victor in the mid-60s. The booklet reprints the original cover art in several places. Victor has never reissued most of this material (one compilation cd and the very fine Mosaic version of "J.J." are about it), so I'm happy to have it, but I'd be very surprised if the Andorrans got any kind of real permission to do it! greg
  6. Something like it--the two were "Mudd's Women" and "I, Mudd." Both great fun. The album cover does look like him a little. Still love this goofy thread! gregmo
  7. Actually Chewy, playing those things made me seasick. Kept 'em all though. I'd never throw any of 'em away! gregmo
  8. You NEED this as much as we NEED your Upcoming Jazz Releases lists back Ditto! As for the Ellington Small Groups, I think many consider this to be one of Mosaic's most important and essential sets. I know I do. gregmo
  9. Actually Newberry has pretty good deals on several of the old Montreux 77 cds, including the Eldridge for $1.99. Just pop over to Amazon and type in Montreux 77. They all come up. gregmo
  10. My grandparents had (and I now have it) a 1939 Motorola console radio/record player that had a changer (as well as a cool push-button radio selector for all those clear-channel AM stations!). It didn't work all that well, though. Would wear the hole in the 78, making it bigger and making the record unplayable. gregmo
  11. Can't help feeling that Lucky would have been a great subject for a multi-label big box back in the salad days, sort of like the Jacquet box. Oh well. gregmo
  12. Each of those could be very cool, especially Miff Mole! Talk about a forgotten master! As for Mosaic, we've been talking about its demise for years, and it's still here. The Recession is gradually ending...too gradually for sure...but ending. Assuming they come out of it in business, I bet they'll be around for a while. They've got great supporters on this Board and elsewhere too. Let's be optimistic! gregmo
  13. Oh, so would I. The two Cole boxes Bear has put out are really magnificent--complete and with incredible, beautiful books to go with them. A '50-'54 box, even in a smaller format, would be way, way cool. gregmo
  14. music? we're supposed to talk about music?? Not 1959 two-door red convertible Cadillac Eldorados with white leather interiors? Or cool red Dodges with tons of chrome? You're no fun Sangry! gregmo
  15. Wish I could--live on the other side of the state--but I'm retiring there in a few years, and then I'll make that scene for sure! How was the Mingus Big Band? gregmo
  16. Good record! I'm listening to Ella: The Concert Years, disc 4. I was a bit nervous about this one--late Ella wasn't always great--but these are pretty good. gregmo
  17. I don't know about music, but that sure is a pretty piece of decorative art! gregmo
  18. Me too. I now have the Marsh/Konitz set and am enjoying it. They really had a great chemistry together.
  19. No,no, no, no--we can't *ever* close this thread! It's one of my favorites! (and that one IS...uh....well, words fail me) gregmo
  20. So, Ubu, wanna trade?! I'll give you Bush, war, tea parties, and our health care system and take those cd prices in return! gregmo
  21. Stolen??! OUCH! That would be really terrible! I do take the jewel cases out and store them with the rest of my cds, but I'd be undone if they got stolen! (And I keep the booklets on a separate shelf close to my listening chair!) gregmo
  22. I must have gotten lucky or something because I only placed my order Thursday night. I ordered it from Amazon. They say it should be here in a week and a half or so. Looking forward to it! Getting hold of those Storyville boxes can be an adventure. gregmo you guys are so spoilt! you can easily obtain recent Storyville releases through amazon.de (or amazon.fr - it's always worth comparing the prices, sometimes amazon.co.uk might be an option, too). we yurpeens order from the US often and just live with shipping costs of 10$ or so for a single crappy disc (and the jewel case will be uselessly crunched half of the time, too...) Spoiled? US?! Actually, I'll be in Yurp for a few months starting next fall, so maybe I'll catch up on some of those Storyvilles! gregmo
